They Have Clemmensson, Bishop will backup. Bishop had a pretty solid college career, but he hopefully wont have to see much action.

It would take you guys about 15 minutes of a BC game to figure out why Kreider is on the roster, particularly one where Okposo and Dubinsky are the best offensive players.

This is an underdog team USA for sure. Would be the last place team in the NHL.

it's like the NIT in basketball - give the losers something to do to take their minds off not making it to the big dance.

Except losers like Andy Greene can get bounced in the first round of the big dance and then play in this.

Salmela was added to the Finnish roster a couple of days ago as well.

Nope. They are not even in the "pre-tournament" team:

Does a country even celebrate when they win this?

"Hooray, we beat Canada and the United States D- team!"

It's a consolation prize of sorts. The best players and the best teams are playing in the Stanley Cup playoffs, and everybody knows it.

Maybe for you guys it is. But it is a big, important tournament for hockey fans in Sweden, Finland, Slovakia, Russia and Czech Rep.

It's not like any of the European countries have their A players. All teams are equal.

It is big thing for European countries, its so big that they have it every year. That should tell you enough how appreciated it is around here.

Ovechkin and Kovalchuk will be suiting up for Russia, so I guess the Russians want this really badly after their failure in the Olympics.

some countries take the world cup very seriously in various sports. anyone see how alot of the european countries look at world cup soccer OMG!!! Im sure this years tourney wont be that popular due to the olympics. also last years tourney was more important because the olympic teams are based on how u finish in the worlds, I dont fully remember the format but back when the olympics started i looked into how teams qualified for olympics and it stated its based on the previous years iihf standings.

i watch the worlds anyway cause its just more hockey to watch when we are in a steady decline of hockey at this point of the year. would rather be able to watch parise guess he wants time off this year.

I know most nations take this seriously but to say other countries are missing as many stars as nations like the US, Canada or Russia is just silly. The "meh" factor of alot of pros turning this down says a bit as well.

Go Andy Greene.

This year is a bit different due to the Olympic tournament. World championships are of course the inferior tournament compared to the Olympics and many national team fixtures have played already over hundred games and donīt have any gas left.

However, nowadays probably every nation participating "takes the tournament seriously". Think of the team USA that used to be formed of mostly college players and Ted Donato being the go-to-guy. That was the time the tournament was considered being meh. Even if some players are saying nay, the mindset is totally different than 15 years ago for instance when the tournament was truly "the European thing".

Many NHL professionals are however willing to represent their countries. Not only because of sense of duty, but also because they might get the upper hand when it comes to choosing the Olympic or World cup teams. Think of Shane Doan, Ryan Smyth and Martin St. Louis for instance.

When it comes to NHL professionals saying no thanks, I think thereīs much more to that than the tournament itself being "meh":

- After a long season you might feel having played enough hockey for a while.
- You might have lingering injuries that needs to be taken care of.
- You might not get a permission from your team to participate.
- you might be in the middle of contract negotiations that you donīt want to jeopardise.
- You might want to spend some time with your family and friends.
- You might just not be interested in travelling to Europe or where ever the tournament takes place.

I wouldnīt mind, if the championships were held only every other year to make it a bigger occasion. But the IIHF makes good money with the tournament so thatīs not gonna happen very soon.

Oh, and kudos for Greene taking the chance. Hopefully he plays a good tournament and "surprises" people.
