I am really glad that RH63 is not the Kings GM.

Cause DD will cost $7mm/yr, Simmonds is a $2mm player, and JJ will be $3-5mm. Either you don't resign your young core, or your roster implies that the free agents you pick up for 2010-11 will all sign 1 year deals, which I highly doubt.
I'm aware of that. That's why I mentioned very little "wiggle room" at the bottom of my original post. Besides, there are too many scenarios to be played out to go over 2011, 2012, 2013...

What?

So the only way to keep the prospect pool going is to have 6, 7 or 8 picks in the first 3 rounds this year?

Ken Holland begs to differ.

It isn't just the quantity of picks but moreso the quality of them. Schenn was a high first round pick. Lewis was a mid first round pick and Moller was a mid 2nd round pick.

Just ask yourself if you think the likes of Kozun and Lokti are enough even with our picks for this year? Clearly, they're not.

When was the last time Lombardi signed a top UFA? never.
Not to mention he has a fetish for Injury prone and former Flyers/Sharks players.
Me thinks DL trades Stoll for Gagne and signs Toni Lydman (or Andy Sutton):

Brayden Schenn ($3.140m) / * Fredrik Modin ($1.400m) / * Brad Richardson ($1.200m)

So if we are almost 16 mill under the cap... how does signing marleau(6.5m) and eaton (1.5-2m) put us over the cap. Signing just kovalchuk won't do it either. We would still have about 5mil in cap space.

Actually, so is yours, if you factor in McCauley's buyout. He still has another year. Cloutier is finally gone though... I think McCauley's is 667k? around there.

Don't you forget Alyn McCauley C 666,667!! I think we still get to pay for one more year of his awesomeness.
I think Williams will be here next year. He brings "leadership" and I think that they hope after he heals up he will be fine.
I also think Stoll will be back. Grier will stay where he is at. He is feeling good about his game and getting some love in the media.
If Kovy can be had for 7.5 and if Fro asks 5.5 sign Kovy. I see Fro signing with the Devils. After losing Kovy they will want to fill the gap in the minds of their fans. Frolov will be the sniper we all wanted him to be here and we will all say "we knew this would happen"
I don't see Schenn on the big club yet, at least not full time. One more year.

I really see the Kings making a couple of small signings, but not the BIG move we all want. They will point out that players need to be signed and they don't want to mess with the "chemistry" of the young core they have worked so hard to develop. Frolov depends on the money he asks for. If he stays at 4 mil I think they keep him. If it is over 5 mil he is gone and the Kings will sign a couple of 2 mil guys. Kovy goes to KHL and spends his free time counting his money.

I think I will be okay with that. I am hoping for a better goaltending year next year, with Bernier giving Quick more rest during the season, maybe a lot more rest. ;0 I think the Kings could have gone further with just a couple of small changes (Jones).

There are no short cuts my friend. You gotta do the dirty work.

It's pretty tight, but I believe you're over by a bit. You have Stoll, JW and Modin all returning, I don't. Plus you have Hickey as one of your option and he makes 1.3 mil.

Damn you!

I thought they were both off the book.

edit:I dropped Sutton and inserted Brookbank which saved me $900,000.

Alright, I'm gonna post a basic roster (not actual line predictions) so that everyone can get a feel for how many roster spots are open and how much salary is needed.

Roster without additions:

Smyth-Kopi-Williams
Richardson-Stoll-Brown
X-Handzus-Simmonds
Clune-X-Westgarth

Extra attacker: X

Scuderi-Doughty
Johnson-X
Drewiske-Greene

Extra defender: Harrold

Quick
Bernier
-------------------

I added Westgarth since we know Murray is gonna want a heavy weight. I estimated Richardson at $1.3M and Clune at $0.7M.

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS
ROSTER: 18;
PAYROLL: $46.432m;
CAP ROOM: $13.208m
BONUSES: $2.840m

Using this as a base you can rather easily get a feel for how many X:es we need to fill and how much money we have to do so. Remember Doughty is probably gonna earn most of his bonuses (he's a freaking Norris nominee) so you might have to remove ~$2M from the actual salary cap room.

Seriously, what?

Clearly? What is clear? I really don't understand your point except that you don't trust our scouting staff to get a good winger or two with 5 of the first 90 picks.

And once again, we don't need to 'replace' Schenn, Lewis and Moller. They are already Kings, and may not all be on the team next year. Your concept of replacing them is totally erroneous.

Does anybody know if the next year counts as the last year of the CBA (like last year, season 2008-09)?

Any CBA expert to know how the bonuses work in that situation?

It's evident that my monitoring of threads during the summer is not going to be doable without a cocktail in hand.

Keep it civil please.

LW
Smyth 6.25
???
???
Clune RFA
C
Kopitar 6.8
Stoll 3.6
Zues 4
Richardson RFA
RW
Williams 3.5
Brown 3.175
Simmonds .822
Parse RFA
Ex.
Westgarth .525
Harrold .583

Totals- 8 forwards at 29.255 + 2 holes + 3 RFAs

D
Doughty 3.475
Scuds 3.4
Greene 2.95
JJ 1.425
???
Voinov .875
Drewiske .6
G
Quick 1.8
Bernier .844

Totals- 6 D and 2 G at 15.369 + 1 hole
Others- .667 (McCauley buyout)
Total Cap- 45.291 + 3 RFAs + 3 holes

This is the state of our team, Parse/Richardson/Clune should cost us no more than 3.5 mil to retain. Therefore we're at 48.791 with a need for a 5/6 defensmen and 2 wingers but only 8.009 of cap space.

Trade Options-
Sharp 3.9 - Chi needs to shed salary, and this would be a good contract for us to acquire.
Pahlsson 2.65 - If we need to acquire cap space (for kovalchuk etc.), a Stoll/Pahlsson deal would save us .995 mil
Souray 5.4 - Unlikely, but adding Souray would give us a very strong D-corpse, and add some offense. He wants out of Edm, but in order to acquire him the only thing that makes sense is sending smyth back this would save us .825 cap space, but shift our need to 3 wingers. I know trading Smyth is very debatable subject, but it's an option.

So if we trade for Sharp, we have about 4.1 for a 5/6 defensemen and a 4th line center (Richy can play wing on the 2nd/3rd line)

Smyth-Kopitar-Williams
Sharp-Stoll-Brown
Richardson-Handzus-Simmonds
Parse-???-Clune
Westgarth Harrold

Doughty-Scuds
Johnson-Greene
Voinov-???
Drewiske

Cap space 4.1

If we want Kovalchuk, going off your 7.75 number, we have to make one of (or both) of the other deals and that would leave only about 1 mil to fill the two holes.

Kovalchuk-Kopitar-Williams
Smyth-Handzus-Brown
Richardson-Pahlsson-Simmonds
Parse-???-Clune
Westgarth Harrold

Doughty-Scuds
Johnson-Greene
Voinov-???
Drewiske

Cap space 1.25 mil.

or

Kovalchuk-Kopitar-Williams
Richardson-Stoll-Brown
Parse-Handzus-Simmonds
Westgarth-???-Clune
Harrold ???

Doughty-Scuds
Johnson-Souray
Voinov-Greene
Drewiske

Cap space 1.08 mil

It's possible that we can save cap space during the season by carrying a 22 man roster

My point is if we can trade JW and Stoll for picks, we can add those picks to what we currently have and perhaps trade up for better picks.

Kovalchuk Kopitar Williams 8.5 - 6.8 - 3.5
Smyth Schenn Simmonds 6.25 3.14 - .821,667
Richardson Handzus Brown 1.5 - 4.0 3.175
Clune Lewis - Westgarth .750 .855 - .525
Harrold - Holloway + .666777 .583,333 - .650 = 41.716667

Doughty Scuderi 3.475 3.4
Johnson Voynov 1.425 .848,833
Greene Hickey 2.95 1.345, 833
Drewiski .616,666 = 14.061332

Quick 1.8
Bernier .843,333
= 2.643333

= 58.421332

Re-sign - Richardson and Clune
Trade - Stoll and Ersberg for Picks.
Let everybody else walk.
Sign Kovalchuk

Over 1.62M (Using last seasons CAP Number - Training Camp Battles/Bonus cushion should take care of that. I'll let DL figure that part out. Hopefully Kovalchuk and Richardson will cost less than 10M I put down.

Don't worry folks, if we trade Stoll now, McCauley's contract will expire and we will let Zeus and Williams walk at the end of next season (or re-sign for less) we will be able to re-sign Doughty, Johnson, and Simmonds.

Nah, off season posts are way more fun than regular season posts. Way more speculation in the off season that doesn't play out.

I agree that it's not the biggest need, but honestly, in the playoffs next year, I'd rather not have a guy like Sutton taking Jones' minutes. That doesn't mean the Kings need to go out and break the bank for Dan Hamhuis, but I think they should shoot for more than Sutton. I don't know, maybe you've got more faith in the guy than I do.
