I'm willing to bet that the Thrashers' expenses total $80MM, not their losses. While attendance records can be fudged, or misleading, they did average over 13k per game, so while there were some 3k games, there were probably some 18k games too. Not great, but again, I would think expenses would total $80MM, not losses. Payroll's the biggest expense, so again, I think it's tough to get to more than $80MM in expenses, let alone $80MM in losses - these are just guesses as I don't know the costs associated with the arena, etc., and other items.

$80 million dollars? As others have said, a little math proves this impossible. Either Dagoon is making this up or his source is making this up.

80 MM? That's like losing 12.3 Wade Reddens!

We only want to lose one.

The Isles lose money but make money due to the cablevision deal they have.

This year the were able to redo the lease where they get money for parking, concessions, and get to choose what concerts play there. Before they did not get anything for those and I think they get a better % of money from ticket sales.

$80 million seems a little out there.

All the fudgiing of accounting in the world couldn't make the Thrashers reach so low a number for this season.

And, the Hawks are good...so even including them wouldn't add up here.

Unless the team was still directly feeling the effects of the horrible AOL/Time Warner merger, this is not possible in the least.

I honestly don't see how the numbers match up. I'm not saying Dagoon is full of ****, I'm thinking this ESPN guy has his numbers ass backwards.

Yeah, let's count all potential future contracts we MAY sign as revenues for this year!

I could believe $8M. $80M is ridiculous. Phoenix comes in at $30M before revenue sharing and they seem to be the worse case. Did they lose $80M over the last THREE years maybe? Does that number include $$$ lost by the Atlanta Hawks franchise (not sure if they are connected)

I need to clear this up and I am 100 % at fault.
The Total was 80 million under Don Waddell as the GM. That is about 40 million each season. I was wrong on the years but wow 80 million in 2 years is still a ton.

I thought Waddell has been GM for 10 years, not 2.

Waddell was the GM of the Thrashers from 1998 to through the 2010 season. On April 14th he become the President of the Thrashers and a replacement was named for the GM spot. So if it was over the coarse of his tenure as GM of the Thrashers, the team would have lost, on average, $6.666 million a year.
