Anyone else heard this Hamhuis Rumor?

Hockey Wilderness had something about it, apparently available with an ESPN Insider account.

Well, I call shenanigans.

Because I think it was all based off conjecture/opinion from Jimmy Matheson from his "More Hockey World" column in the Edmonton Journal (a must read every Sunday.)

Quote:
The Nashville Predators will come up with the money to re-sign Patrick Hornqvist, but they don’t have enough for unrestricted free agent defenceman Dan Hamhuis, who’s probably a $4-million US guy, not a $2.2-million man. Hamhuis is exactly what the Minnesota Wild need — a solid shutdown guy.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to make Hamhuis, but it doesn't make sense with the current blueline, unless someone moves. AND we have a guy like Hamhuis, his name is Nick Schultz.

Agreed.
We would like Hamhuis. We don't NEED Hamhuis. $4 million can be spent on a 2nd line center or first line scorer.

That rumor makes absolutely no sense yet will probably result in another three bad trade proposals. Seriously, unless another defenseman is moved at the draft, there's absolutely no reason for the Wild to engage in signing another $3-4 million defenseman.

I read that too since I have an Insider subscription. I think it said something along the lines that a reporter suggested it, but really nothing more than someone said it in a column. I thought the guy was from Edmonton. Their NHL section is pretty crappy, I mostly have it for the NFL.

Someone forgot to tell the rumor-mongers that DR isn't the Wild's GM anymore.

let alone the fact 4 would be the bare minimum... and much more likely to hit 5...

Well, we could badly use Dan Hamhuis. The problem is that our GM doesn't agree. We don't have the room for Hamhuis now.

How about owning the 21st-ranked goal against average, for starters.

With both Zidlicky and Zanon, adding Hamhuis would officially make St. Paul Nashville North.

Adding Hamhuis would be nice, but we simply cannot afford it. I'm kind of curious to see how our PP blue line will look next year. Zidlicky, Burns, and Barker are all locks to be there, but do we really want Havlat on the point? I don't really like him there. I'd be more in favor of putting someone with a big shot there, not really sure who though...

I'll copy what I posted elsewhere about Hamhuis:

Initially, I thought he’d be an upgrade defensively, but for the amount of money he’d cost, I’m not sure he’d be much of an improvement.

Here’s where Hamhuis would have fit in if we plug in his stats to the Wild. I’ll figure without Johnsson:

Shots – 2nd (115)
TOI – 4th (21:15)
ES TOI – 2nd (18:09)
PK TOI – 3rd (2:39)
Hits – 2nd (148)
Blocked Shots – 4th (95)
Takeaways – 1st (48)
Giveaways – 2nd (51)

Those aren't bad numbers, but they're not great. Basically, he'd be a slight upgrade over Schultz, but he'd likely cost more, and he'd take up a roster spot that a young kid from Houston can come in and try and prove his worth.

I'm really not a fan of adding middling players through free agency. We desperately lack talent, but if we overpay for another guy who's not going to be a top minute player, that doesn't help in the long run. I'd rather overpay for a top flight free agent and bring in a young player that can hopefully grow into a role.

Scoring is more of a priority than another shutdown defensemen

Hamhuis wouldn't be worth the money to us, I think we have plenty of help on the blue-line as we have quite a few guys in the AHL that I think will be ready to go next year if needed if/when injuries hit. I'm sure Fletch will make quite a few depth signings, but that's about all we'll see in FA I'm sure.
