i can appreciate Schultz. Like Kimmy before him, he's a touch overpaid for what he does. However, with Johnsson gone Nick is IMO our most solid defensive guy. I've seen proposals recently offering him up and I shudder to think how low our D will sink if we swap him out for a forward. Never know what might happen, but no one would dish him out and expect a rookie to come in and do the same job.

FWIW i though Johnsson was quite a bit better defensively than Schultz, but then he was making more $, too. I'm able to swallow Schultz' salary right now (as i was with Johnsson) because we are short of those kinds of players--you don't just get rid of one because he's overpaid and insert a rookie, and what would we have to give up in another trade to get a Schultz-level defenseman back for less salary?
I don't see him going anywhere, and I'm okay with that. Definitely don't want him to be replaced by another Zidlicky.

man...what a difference a year makes.

When Schultz signed, he took a deal that paid less than what he would get on the open market, and now people view his contract as being gaudy and that The Hammer is overpaid.

I'll stand by it, but I think you get your money's worth with Schultz. That's good value imo.

I feel that there a lot of people who signed new contracts two seasons ago are in that position mainly due to the market and salary cap stabilizing. It's not just Schultz.

ya I absolutely agree, but I think of all the deals, you get the most all-around value with Schultz.

Fun stats about Nick Schultz, among Wild defensemen this year:

Points: T-2nd (20)
+/-: 10th (-10)
Shots: 4th (83)

TOI/G: 6th (20:58)
ES TOI: 5th (17:24)
PK TOI: 4th (2:28)
PP TOI: 7th (1:05)

Hits: 3rd (84)
Blocked Shots: 2nd (158)
Giveaways: 5th (29)
Takeaways: 5th (15)

He's an average, 3rd pairing guy who's making quite a bit of money. Greg Zanon does far more for half the money. Brent Burns does far more for the same money.
