3 years @ $600k?

IIRC, Viedensky's upside is a good two-way center with some pop (I'm thinking poor-man's Martin Hanzal?) so that's a pretty fair sounding deal.

He plays in the WHL, right? Did you see any of him in the playoffs Nem? His stat line for them was certainly pretty good.

Nah, didn't get to see any. Only one series per round was on TV, and never any of the Blades series. A couple of people who did see them said he looked pretty good at least in the series vs Brandon.

and @Easy: Looking at Max's scouting reports, he's got to work on his agility/turning, but overall he's a high-energy 2-way forward with a bit of offensive pop. I'm basing my Hanzal comparison on the fact that scouting reports of him read a lot like I remember ones for Hanzal in his draft year. Of course, Hanzal also had size (6'5) and while Viedensky isn't small, he's not that big (6'2 I believe)

Less than a year after the pick in which forward Marek Vienna was selected 189th overall, the San Jose Sharks, have signed the 19-year-old player to a three-year rookie contract.

The Handlova native played this season in Prince George with the Coguars and the Saskatoon Blades of the WHL playing 61 games and scoring 59 points. The Sharks hope after junior season he will be on the AHL Worcester Sharks. In the play-off match in Vienna game yet intervened.

I watched all the home games of Blades series against Brandon and in my opinion he was our best forward in the series, had alot of pop in his step and was always driving the net and making plays.

He's was already added on to the Worcester roster this afternoon ..

Since he will be 20 in August , he could (most probably) be on the Worcester roster for the 2010-11 season or go back to the jrs as an overage player

My guess is that he plays in Worcester next year. With some folks possibly making the roster next year, they could probably use another forward. Their center depth isn't that great either with Zalewski, and Ferriero having moved to (or at least being more effective at) wing. I wouldn't be entirely surprised to see him beat out Quirk or Desjardins for a spot, especially since Quirk isn't a prospect. (He doesn't have a NHL contract.)

He was signed by Worcester to an ATO a few weeks ago and has been on the roster since 4/15 or so...

Some additional stats prior to his first WHL season.

His numbers from 08-09 are not bad at all for a two-way forward, I'm surprised he dropped to the 7th round (according to nhl.com his final rank was 56th). Not to mention him transitioning over to North American hockey from the Slovak Juniors.

He's been in a couple of fights

http://www.hockeyfights.com/fights/92905

Sweet check on the play, but cannot hold his own during the fight. Seems to be a strong player who doesn't take a lot of penalties (I'm sure he'll be a solid 205-210 lbs as he starts to fill in). I'm really liking this kid.

Looking back at 2009 we did pretty damn good for only having 5 picks.

I loved me some Viedensky this year with the Blades. Big body who knows how to use it (especially to absuse some smaller WHL forwards). Has a scrappy side to him, skates pretty well and most importantly...elevates his game when the stakes are high! Was very impressive in the playoffs this year and seemed to somehow disappear into the fold for the perfect pass when it was needed. I like his play. He should do well in Worcester!

Thanks Nem,

I thought that you had in person look. I am sorry I wrote skating when what I really meant was speed and elusiveness (deftness when I talk about refs).

Could be another late round steal for San Jose, at least we can all hope so.

Saskatoon Blades Season Ticket Holder here. This is going to be a big loss if Marek leaves to go play in Worchester. He said in a interview after we got busted out of the playoffs that he has talked to Sharks GM and said that he is going to play one more season in the dub to develop some more. He is a very good player that skates pretty well and likes to get gritty in front of the net and get the dirty goals. He is a great player that will hopefully have a great career after he is done in Saskatoon, if that happens. Thanks

Yes, Viedeň means Vienna in Slovak. The -ský suffix is usually used in adjectives, but also in some names (like Višňovský for example). Hundreds of years ago many men from what today is Slovakia went to "build" Vienna, i.e. build the buildings, so maybe some of his ancestors actually did that and people back home refered to him as Viedenský. And maybe I am completely wrong.

So, I wonder will the Sharks return him to juniors next year or will he play in the AHL? What do you guys think?

I would say that he's AHL bound. This is for the simple fact that WHL teams can only carry two european players on their rosters and only three 20 year olds (if I recall correctly). The fact that he will fit both the qualifications probably hurts his cause for returning to the CHL. Not a bad thing, as I think he is ready for the next step.
