Should Canada establish an Ann Arbor (usntdp) type of program?

The Canadian government already spends more money on development than any other country and the ROI on this type of program is minimal to nonexistent given that Canada is already at the top.

It's embarrassing that we don't compete in this tournament like we should be, the excuse of allowing these players to gain experience is shallow when we should be in this tournament (u18) to win it.
Didn't Guy Carbonneau coach that team ?

I think it would be a slap in the face of Major Junior and all their fans for a team like that to be deployed.

You would be asking the fans to give up the top 20 or so players in the country, fans which are much closer to the grass roots of hockey than the NHL.

We don't need Ann Harbor, Cole Harbor has been good enough so far.

What are people thoughts if Canada does the NTDP model at the Bantam Major and Midget level before these kids hit junior aged?

Canada does not need to do anything like the US

We have the best hockey infrastructure in the world as it is

Once kids reach 12 years old they are slowly groomed for elite level hockey

Peewee Levels AAA, AA and A. The 3 levels are designed to split the kids into there competitive categories and also allow kids who do become better to move up.

Also at this age Summer Hockey teams are selected. In Manitoba you have teams like the Winnipeg Mustangs, Manitoba Lightning and the Winnipeg Junior Jets. These are pretty much all star caliber teams that travel to summer tournaments.

the next level is Bantam AAA,AA and A. The same summer teams repeat themselves. Hockey Canada west has also started an Under 16 team and competition at the Provincial level. The first one took place this year with Team Alberta beating Team Manitoba in the finals.

Midget AAA,AA and A hockey is next. Some 15 year olds play Midget but not all. Some 16 and 17 year olds play Junior but not all. There is the U17s splitting Canada into Team Pacific(BC and Alberta), Team West(Sask and Manitoba), Team Ontario, Team Quebec and Team Maritimes. FYI Since 1997 when the u17 has become a regular thing a Canadian team has always been in the finals and we have won it 8 times

The next level is the CHL. Followed by the Jr A leagues, and then Jr B. These teams will send players to compete in the u18s and u20s world championships.

We have won medals in the last 12 World Juniors, 5 Gold,5 Silver and 2 Bronzes, more than any other country. The last 11 Ivan Hlinka tournaments were we send our best to we have won 9 Gold medals.

Why in the world do we need to change our hockey structure when we already have the best one there is?

The fact is our best 18 year olds are still playing CHL when the U18 tourney happens, some even in the NHL so clearly they are deveolping properly, its just hit or miss which players are actually available. sucks losing but we still put the most teenagers in the NHL every year, so clearly we are doing something right.

I think an Ann Arbor style of program is more for smaller hockey nations that, despite decent NT programs, have had a harder time consistently developing quality talents (Latvia, Norway, Germany, France), or the nations trying to get their programs off the ground (Great Britain, Spain, Mexico). It's also a good idea for federations that are looking at ways to put them over the edge competitively and work their way into the top flight, like Japan or Ukraine.

Slovakia has already put together a program like this, and we saw what it has done for them in Ottawa in the 09 WJCs.

Even with the struggles at the U-18s, I can't see Canada putting something like this together. The feeder system they have now is pretty rock-solid.

We have too many top-end players for something like this to work. We basically have a similar system working in the CHL. If we wanted to pump out more players, probably best to invest more money in the league to get better training, facilities etc.

Having the NTDP compete in some tourny with top CHL teams actually would be quite fun to watch.

What excuses? That we send an average team in that U18 (april) and still reasonably compete. The majority of the players who should be on that team are with their junior teams in playoffs at that time. It's one tournament that we expect to do poor in every year. Look what happens at the Summer U18, much better results.
