Damn it, I want Pitt and Penn State together. I know it doesn't grow the Big Ten's expanse the way the other non-Notre Dame schools do, but Pitt is twenty times the school as ****ing Nebraska is and the Big East is ****ing useless. I'd prefer the Big Ten go for a power grab and just destroy the Big East (including Notre Dame, who is only an independent in football...**********) and absorb Pitt, West Virginia, Rutgers, and Syracuse leaving the newer Big East schools crawling back to whoever would take them. The thought of Penn State and Nebraska in the same conference is just...bleh. Way too far apart.

I agree. Its about time Pitt & Penn State renew the rivalry & the only way that's going to happen in via the Big 10. And there is no way in heck that Notre Dame accepts this invite......they will never join a conference for football.

Might as well just make two conferences: Big 10 and non-Big 10 while we're at it.
Call me ignorant, but why would the Big 10 be more appealing to the Big 12 or Big East school over their current leagues?
The Big Ten is swimming and shrouded in academic prestige thanks to the CIC. The Big 12 North schools make almost no money on their TV deal and the Big East barely has a TV deal. The Big Ten not only has one of the best deals for football, but also for basketball and their own TV network. And the academic and financial boost from CIC membership is huge.
Being in the Big Ten is basically a university president's wet dream.
I still see no reason for Texas to leave the Big 12 (or if Missouri/Nebraska jump, Big 10).
Although Rutgers and Nebraska in the same conference seemingly defies logic.
If the Big Ten really does this, the Pac-10 will immediately react by inviting Colorado and the Big 12 (9?) will crumble. Texas would play the Big Ten and SEC off each other for the best deal.
And it wouldn't be that weird, geographically. I mean, central Pennsylvania and Iowa are pretty freaking far apart, but nobody complains. The conference would be entirely contiguous.

I just glanced at that quick. I don't understand why other conferences don't just do the same with their academics. Obviously it'd take some time to get off the ground, but everyone would benefit.

I would actually prefer things to work out a little differently than as suggested in that article. I'm secretly hoping that the Big Ten expanding forces the SEC to do the same, picking up Clemson along the way. I would love to see games against Georgia, Auburn, etc every year (kind of similar to the past) instead of once every three or so years as we have now. Plus, that gives more meaning to our biggest rivalry game (impacting conference standings).
Anyway it seems clear that these super conferences are coming. Personally I hope the Big Ten picks up Pitt along with most of the others mentioned. As said in an earlier post, a Pitt-PSU conference game every year would be great.
Quick edit: This is a little bit off topic, but if the changes to the 5 main conferences go down as suggested the ACC would be a monster basketball conference. Duke, UNC, Syracuse, Louisville, Cinci, WVU, etc. Although the big ten would be nothing to sneeze at either =P
