Konrad Abeltshauser

My junior team here in Canada, the Halifax Mooseheads, recently selected Konrad Abeltshauser in the CHL Import Draft. Could anyone give me any information on what type of player he is, and what to expect from him? Thanks

big and mobile puck-mover with good skating (especially for a german). pretty much the prototype of a offensive-defender. while being big and mean, he could be much more aggressive in the D-zone and grittier.

i'd compare his style to jay bouwmeester. of course not the same potential.

His +/- is by far the worst in the league. Is it because his defensive game is not up to par right now or because he plays a big role on such a bad team?

They do have 11 of the 25 players with the worst +/- after all, and are the only team without a single point.

Halifax is by far the worst team in the league this season, but Abeltshauser has been our best defenceman when healthy. He needs to work on his defensive game, but it's not nearly as bad as the +/- shows.
He came here as a 17 year old, and had to learn a new style of play on smaller rinks, as well as a new culture to live in. Yet, right from training camp, he's been outplaying 19 year old veterans. All this while battling injuries pretty much as soon the pre-season began.
He's a bit raw, but he's been very impressive so far.

Found a few videos on youtube.

Great to see how absolutely excited he seemed to be invited to the German team

Canadians scout Denis Morel about Konrad

That 'Herd on the Hill' video was great. No idea what they were doing in Ottawa though. Thought it was funny that Abeltshauser thought Ottawa's junior team was called the Gatineau. Though I am surprised by how good his english is. I guess I just assumed that coming from Europe, language would be an issue, but he seems to be doing well.

To say he's a project would be an understatement. On the plus side - Chara sucked in the CHL too - he had to figure out how to get all the pieces of his body to work.

He has to work on virtually every part of his game.

I've seen him listed on a bunch of draft lists to go in the top 75. Does anyone think he will still be drafted? Or is there a chance that he will be passed over?

Yeah those were great videos. I say they were their to play gatineau across the river, and taking some time to do some sightseeing.

I think Konrad will be drafted 3rd round or later, he certainly has lots of tools and i would take a risk on him. take him late and you have a low risk high reward situation.

This guy can dominate but, he still needs more time to be one of
the best players in the league.

In Germany, even at the lowest level, you usually learn English for five years(starting with the 5th grade).

Given that - I think his English is mediocre at best. On an international standard though I can see why they give him credit ... particularly compared to Eastern Europeans (who are ahead when it comes to maths & natural sciences but s*ck at foreign languages).
