Difference being of course that Calgary sucked even before last summer.

That was more so the case in the first two years after the lockout for New Jersey. We were able to dump Dan McGillis in the AHL, trade away Malakhov's cap hit to San Jose which cost us a first, and got off of Mogilny's cap hit on a technicality. We got lucky that first year when Brian Gionta erupted for 48 goals while making 630K.

One thought: Huet + 1st to Tampa for Mike Smith? You guys would save 3.5 mil this year while getting out of the last year of Huet's deal. You guys have a deep farm, so losing a late first wouldn't put a huge dent in your pipeline. Tampa, seemingly in need of a #1 goalie still, could hope that Huet reverts back to his Eastern Conference numbers. Lightning could use that pick to replenish their prospect pool.

(personally wouldn't do it if I were Tampa, but just a thought)

That could be just what we need. We'll have to see how the rest of the season shakes out. Huet is finished here, I'm sure he knows it, and wouldn't mind living out his NHL days in Florida (unfortunately it's the Waffle House part and not the coke and babes part but oh well).

Even with the above asumptions on HUET's contract beaing eaten as he plays in Rockford or is loaned to a euro club while Rocky pays his salary + Sopel is traded or retires, and we are still right up against the cap ASSUMING only $4million on Niemi+Hjalmarsson combined...You still expect Niemi is only going to get $2million IF we go all the way with him to a Cup win? He is up for arbitration and winning a Cup has got to add $$$$ above what he would have been raised to just on his reg season comparisons to other goalies (REMEMBER he had great GAA -the arbitrator will give him --not the team--credit for that). The arbitrator will also look at the fact his team chose him to be the numero uno AHEAD of the $5.6 million Huet.ADD all this up and $2million/yr for Niemi could be a pipedream..

$2million fora #3 D-man like Hammer is more than fair when compared to D. Keith's 2nd contract of just $1.4 million per a few years ago--HOWEVER there are plenty of other #3 D-men in the league getting more than hat playinmg similar minutes to Hammer...so you might add a few $100 k more ...

Add everything up and the bill for the 2 could be closer to $6 million than to $4million...

So it is not clear we can ONLY dump Versteeg and not BUFFY or SHARp or Bolland too...

IF we lose LADD in this process too-then the entire 3rd line that FINALLY has clicked
LADD BOLLAND VERSTEEG loses 2/3 of its structire or 3/3 if Bolland is traded ...THIS IS A RE-BUILD job for line #3--so there is NO WAY we can be as deep on the bottom 2 lines...We'll be younger, more inexperienced---the negatives in the +/- stats will rise and line #3 scoring willbe down..

The cap cuts WILL hurt us --no doubt about it.
