I'm confused as hell

Maybe I'm missing something but I was under the impression that players, prospects, and picks can't be traded between teams past Deadline day until The Playoffs are over..

This says Carolina traded their 5th round pick for Coyotes' Jared Staal....Wtf?

You can still make trades, although it doesn't happen very often. Not sure why the coyotes would just give staal up for a 5th.

My thoughts too. When does the trading start? When you get eliminated?

I believe you can trade once the playoff start and you're no longer part of them. It rarely happens, though.

If they couldn't sign him in the next 2 months, he would have gone back into the draft.

Eliminated teams can make trades whenever they want. We traded for Trevor Linden during the '99 playoffs.

As far as teams that are still in the playoffs, I'm pretty sure they can make trades too, but the fact that the players can only be added to their roster the following year and that most GMs of teams in the playoffs are actually focused on the playoffs, is why it rarely happens.

Everyone can make trades with who they want at any given time,

however the traded players may not play in the playoffs for the new team.

The habs can trade Halak for Crosby tomorrow...(not that we want him)
