We're going to have more defenceman than forwards very, very soon.

I think this means one of Carle, Fischer's rights (or let him walk) or Weber are gone.

Yes, with a Russian and Slovak as our two best players.

I really think Carle is ready to move up! It sucks he's so injury prone .

I like the foresight of management on this one to save some cap space this summer to sign some players. They're exploring their options early. If we can get him done soon, it leaves a lot of flexibility for this summer. It opens the door to move Hamrlik and/or Spacek and saves money for Pleks, Carey and Halak.

If this guy comes over I think he's playing with the habs. No way he refuses a pro-salary to play in Hamilton. Its either Habs or bust as someone said above. If this guy is as mean as you all ment , then I'd rather have him in the lineup than OB.

i think he makes the habs at worst as a 7th dman. he'll cost maybe 1 million a year - significantly less than hammer who i expect to get dealt if we're going to sign both goalies and pleks....worse comes to worse he replaces MAB next year. not sold on carle or weber yet

MAB and Emelin are two different players.

Emelin is either on the team, or in the AHL. He's not going to be a 7th d. It's better for him to play, than to watch.

After next year, Montréal's d will be Subban, Spacek, O'bryne RFA/UFA Gorges RFA, Hamrlik UFA, Markov UFA, Gill UFA

Gill will probably retire. Hamrlik too, if he's not traded. If he doesn't retire, he won't be re-signed. Gorges will probably be re-signed Hopefully O'bryne is too. Potentially Markov as well.

So:
Markov - O'bryne
Gorges - Subban
Spacek - ???

We'd have Carle, Weber, Emelin, possibly Bennett/UFA signing/trade. If O'bryne leaves/is traded, then we really need Emelin. We need a physical defenseman.

Ahead of Grebeshov, Kalinin and Kulikov.

As for Korneyev, being top-2 d-men with the russian team for the last few years, I would take him before Yemelin anytime.
As I said before, we already have Korneyev type dmen. Plus he's making good money and very happy over there. He has said he looks forward to his team doing well next year. Konstantin Korneyev is NEVER coming over.

And that is when I lost interest. then again, doesn't mean he couldn't bring a lot.

I'm looking forward to see him play with la sainte flanelle! He's playing more than 2 top4 D's and a Top Prospect for the Panthers. Sounds like he could crack the lineup next year with the departure of hammer/spacek

Agreed, the timing is perfect for Emelin to come over, except for the fact that he's, well, Russian, and we know how fickle they can be. If nobody gets moved in the offseason, and we keep Markov-Gorges-Hammer-Spacek-Gill-Subban-O'Byrne, then there's really not much place for Emelin on the team this coming year. My worry is that he simply will not want to play in Hamilton, and will go home at the first mention of being sent down. Too bad, because its a perfect scenario to have him on the farm team to start the year, and be our first call up whenever we have D go down. He could play 10-20 NHL games this year, and then be fully ready with a year of Guy Boucher schooling under his belt for the following year (When Hammer and Gill move on). Who knows, Maybe Gauthier has already thought of all this and has worked out something with Emelin and his agent. Should be interesting...

Who the heck would take hamrlik's contract in the summer? I certainly wouldn't. With OB's steady progress and Subban's ultra fast development, Hammer is obviously expendable, but who in their right mind would take a 5.5 mil cap hit for the guy? I think Hammer will be moved, but teams will wait until a fair chunk of his salary has already been paid out for the season.

In the meantime, the top 6 looks very strong with a good mix of everything. Hammer and Spacek could very well be the 3rd pairing, and what team wouldn't kill to have that kind of depth?

If this emelin talk has any validity, that's great. But the kid missed a real opportunity to move up the depth chart in this organization by coming over sooner. The timing kinda stinks for him.

How big is he really? Most sites give his height as either 6'0 or 6'1, while is weight is under 200 lbs according to most sites. Some of those are probably pretty old, from the draft even, but I found only one (http://habsprospects.hockeyhq.net/emelin.html) that had him significantly larger 6'1/223lbs.

If he's in fact a hair under 6'1' and slightly over 200 lbs, which would seem reasonable, he's big enough for his size not be an disadvantage is general play, but it's really on the small side for a punishing, physical defenseman.

I'd still rather have Korneyev.

Korneyev is like Markov to Emelin's Brooks Orpik.

Emelin doesn't stand up as a guy who's a great fighter, but I wonder if we could end up developping him into a nastier version of Volchenkov.

I'm curious to see how this unfolds now. Emelin has been a huge disappointment so far in his almost signing with us so many times. Now I don't know where he'll play, for how much and what teh terms would be. Not saying I don't want him, just that he better have been worth the wait and better then whoever he replaces in the line up which I think it'll be hard considering he has to learn the new system, adapt to the new culture and team. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
