Someone hung that tag on him a long time ago. It was wrong then and it is wrong now. Emelin is huge compared to Kaparitis. Where Kasparatis was annoying Emelin could be punishing.

good news indeed. If Emelin makes the big club next year, and with Subban all but locking down a spot, our defence should be fairly cap friendly (assuming Hammer is gone)

As for Korneyev, being top-2 d-men with the russian team for the last few years, I would take him before Yemelin anytime.
It depends what you are looking for. Korneev is an offense-oriented non-physical defenseman while Emelin is the opposite. You need both kinds of players on a team.

Wow, I love all the people saying he would make next year's team, even if he has never played a single game in North America. Sure you've seen montages on YouTube, but I could make a montage making Pierre Dagenais look like Wayne Gretzky.

A lot of players can be good in the KHL yet suck in the NHL, and Emelin isn't even a dominant KHL player. Remember Janne Lahti and Mikael Johansson, the great free agents we got from Europe? Yeah, they couldn't even survive in the AHL.

I'm not saying that he sucks, I barely know anything about the guy and have never seen him play. But let's be reality here, the guy is in no way a lock to make the team and could very well not even be a good AHLer.

Emelin can play both LD and RD.

I saw him once this year, he smoked Trunev into the boards, was a nasty hit. But I've heard he's cut down on his physical play some, but that's likely a good thing as defensemen that are overly physical need to find the right balance between taking the body but not taking themselves off the ice too often.

This is Emelin's second appearance with the WC team. He's also played in the Euro Tour a few times, wjc twice as well.

If he's in fact a hair under 6'1' and slightly over 200 lbs, which would seem reasonable, he's big enough for his size not be an disadvantage is general play, but it's really on the small side for a punishing, physical defenseman.
He looks 6'0-6'1 but he's thick, 215 maybe

From what I had heard last summer, the Habs couldn't come to financial terms with his agent as he was coming off a bad year in the KHL and after being on the WC team, he wasn't even invited to the prelim camp. So my guess was that the Habs felt, no need to push it with him, let him go back to AK Bars and see how he does, now that he seems to have gotten back on track (things were going great for him at Lada, but the move to AK Bars seemed to have backfired on him) now seems like the time to bring him over.

I talked about this in the prospect thread, as I wondered if he would be more inclinded to come over this summer, now that his team has won back to back championships (as he's stated in the past he wants to play in the NHL), so after winning two championships and playing in a 3rd (against Markov) perhaps he would welcome a new challenge.

I didn't see anyone say he was a lock to make the team. But comon sense says he won't give up playing for 1M+ to play in the AHL for 62K. They could work out something in his contract that states if he doesn't make the Habs, they can loan him back to his KHL club.

Either way if signed, it's not a low risk move and we'll see how he does. If it doesn't work out, oh well no biggie since we have Subban and others anyway.

I would like to see him agree to play with the Bulldogs...then we would get to see what he is really like with no more assumptions.

I'll believe it when I see him in a Habs uni at training camp, until then he's still a myth

Tony Marinaro also confirmed Alexei Emelin is extremely close to signing a contract with the Habs, for how much and the length are unknown. Tony is usually on the ball with his sources.

I will beleive it when I see him in a Habs uniform on the Bell Centre ice.

He will probably sign another contract thru his other agent with a KHL Club too.

Ya this could be him using the Habs as a bargaining chip to get more money out of his KHL club. It sucks never knowing whats really going on.

Next year the Habs will already have and signed - unless a trade happens - 7 d-men with NHL experience.

Markov-Hamrlik-Spacek-Gorges-Gill-O'Byrne and Subban.

I am pretty sure Emelin won't come over to play in Hamilton.

Hamrlik is likely gone next year (trade or buy-out)

A entry contract for a 25 yo european like that, aren't we obligated to sign him for 1 year ?

I wouldn't buy out a 5,5M one-year-left contract. I think it would be plain stupid.

best option would be to trade him but thats a big IF

if we buy him out i believe its a cap hit of 1,83millions for the next 2 year

we need some cap space to sign Plekanec, Halak & Price (if we don't trade Price)

I'd be really happy if we can manage to sign Emelin and somehow get rid of Hammer this summer.

So what would our D depth be?

Markov-Emelin > In Mother Russia, pairing plays YOU
Spacek-Subban > Super Subby Squadron
Gill-Gorges > G-unit
O'Byrne > Irish backup plan
Carle > Guy who got injured at training camp yet again

? (not sure if I should use a sarcasm smilie here )

He's already under contract ?

Another reason to beleive he WON'T sign with the Habs, unless they are giving him a stellar treatment.

Yes he's under contract. Ive heard he has an out clause, it sounds like he's going to sign now.
