Johnny Boychuk? Go hard after him.

I was looking through some of the players, and one guy that caught my eye was Johnny Boychuk. He's just old enough to be a UFA this July. He was a very important part of the Boston defense. A young, physical player who has a hard shot. Can play a shutdown role and still has room to improve and elevate his game some more.

He will not only come cheaper than a Volchenkov, Martin or any other name out there, but will even play up to par or better than some of those more expensive options.

He was making 500,000. I say we def. go hard after this guy. It fits the mold of Torterella wanting to go younger too; as he is 26-27 years old.

Who ever signs this guy is going to get the steal of the free agency, mark my words. He's going to come considerably cheaper then other options as well. He's very physical, yet can skate too. Which is key in case he finds himself out of position; which he rarely does b/c of his skating. Booming shot as well.

Boychuk will be Group 6 UFA July 1. Group 6 is player 25 or older who in 3 or more pro seasons has played < 80 reg season and playoff games. Boychuk is 26 and has played in 71 NHL games in six years of pro. So he's UFA. Boston wants to sign him but he may see what July 1 brings.

I'm not sure. He made 500,000.

3x that would be 1.5 mill....give or take. Maybe it takes that.

I would be interested. Not sure I would give him too long of a contract. He has looked good, but that has been with a great d-man in Chara as his partner. I would agree with that Jon said, 3 years @ 2 million/season

If he's available I would bet someone will be willing to give him more than $2 mil per season. He might hit $3-3.5.

How often does he lay out guys like in these videos? Regardless, if he plays with a bit of an edge and is generally solid in his own end and and can get the puck on net I'd be interested.

He consistantly hits opponents. I remember in 1 game, he had 3 solid hits, I mean really good jarring hits in the 1st period alone.

The good thing, he tends do be clean when he does it. That's cause he can skate and has good hockey smarts.

He has a rocket from the point. Defensively, it can be an adventure sometimes but offensively he knows what to do. Physically, he plays with an edge, and he is big enough to do some damage but if people expect him to come in and be a top-pairing d-man they are going to be sadly mistaken.

He has began to elevate his game defensively. He was tremendous against the sabres in the playoffs.

He does have good offensive instincts, and any offesnive number is mostly likely going to be a direct result of his booming shot.

I totally agree, to his credit he picked up his game when his team needed it. However, he also picked it up right when he was paired with Chara. We have seen that occur before with Redden. Not saying its the same thing but I would be hesitant to offer him a large longer-term contract.

3 years at $1.7 each year.

2nd pair guy

Pair him as the bad cop with Gilroy or Del Zotto.

Don't go over $2 million as we don't want a Jeff Finger 2.0 here.

I'm still hoping Valatenko can come over and him and Boychuk would make this D much meaner.

every proposal on here concerning next year has redden off the team. believe me i dont want anything more in the world but does everyone really think its gonna be that easy?

as far as boychuk goes it would be a great pickup and whoever grabs him is gonna get a great player.

The way free agency works there is NO way that you can get him to sign on the dotted line at 1.7 mill/year. He hasn't even reached his prime yet and he put up solid numbers last year. You are definitely talking 2.5-3 mil/yr to get him locked up, and it would probably need to be long term.
