No video clip has brought chills and a tear to the eye more often than those final seconds of that cup win. Best. Call. Ever. I was -9 at the time.

Beautiful! That's the series that made me a Flyers fan! I was 11 years old and it is one of the best decisions of my life!

I have to agree - I remember jumping around our living room at the end of the game (I was 13).

It's funny to look back on it and compare it to today's Cup presentations. There were a ton of fans on the ice, no formal presentation, no speech from the Commissioner - just hand the Cup to Captain Clarke and let the party begin.

Nope. Mom has never had a favourite team - she cheered for the underdog mostly, but did like that Dorny got his name on the Cup. My Dad liked the Wings, and was okay with the Leafs and the Habs, and the Bruins.

I agree that it is imperative for the Flyers to win a Cup for this generation. The consecutive Cups are incredibly meaningful especially for the "Us vs. Them" aura that permeated through the NHL at the time. The back-to-back victories (using as a singular tense) is significant and can't be disconnected but, by comparison, the Phillies winning two titles in 1980 and 2008 gave new energy and rejuvenated the younger sect. And while I am not minimizing the importance of winning a Stanley Cup -- that would be foolish to any of us who follow the sport and know its symbolism -- the Flyers have provided tremendous excitement through the years. It's what kept me a solid fan this entire time.

Joe Watson was asked about that and he responded:

Quote:
Q: One of the most replayed video clips from the past is the final seconds of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Boston Bruins and you are alone behind the net handling the puck. Did you keep the puck?

Watson: “Unfortunately, no. If you look at that replay, Bobby Orr shot the puck down behind our net. I was there with the puck and I looked up to see the clock and there were still several seconds to play. There was nobody near me. I did not even touch the puck until (Bruin) Wayne Cashman came near me and I touched the puck with four seconds to go. There was so much noise and pandemonium in the Spectrum that the timekeeper did not hear the whistle blow for the icing call. Everybody jumps over the bench in jubilation and they think that the game is over. I am yelling at the guys that the game is not over and (teammate) Terry Crisp skates over to me. I go down to reach for the puck and Crisp, the little bugger, who only played four shifts the entire game, grabbed the puck before I could get my hands on it. He has that puck displayed on his home’s mantle and I was left with diddley squat.”
Two human interest stories about Bernie Parent. At a ceremony, he was given keys to a car by Sport Magazine for being the MVP of the post-season. It was at a banquet in a Philly hotel. He walked over to Fred Shero and handed him the keys and said "You are the MVP (in so many words)." He gave the car to Shero.

Also, he was supposed to vacation with his wife in Hawaii that week. There is (or was) an annual award given in Canada to the best French-Canadian athlete. He won but the ceremony was scheduled during his planned vacation. He said he needed to talk to his wife; they went to the dinner to get the award and Hawaii was changed to Acapulco.

Wow.

When he said "fear" I thought he might invoke Gerry Meehan.

What a great piece.

yeah I remember when they gave guys a car for being the MVP of the playoff series. I think they did that in other sports as well.
I think Bernier earned the right to go wherever he wanted to for vacation after the season he had.
Never knew he gave the car to Shero. that is great.

I couldn't get the link to play. I read the CBC rules and maybe unavailable outside of Canada. If anyone has such issues, here's another option -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsY9j...ayer_embedded#!

Freeze the image at 4:50 and look at Campbell.
