Herb Brooks had his Smurfs. Tortorella is going to have his Hobbit -- the Norwegian Hobbit, Mats Zuccarello-Aasen, the diminutive 22-year-old winger with world-class skill, who will sign a free agent contract with the Blueshirts at the conclusion of the next month's World Championships.

Regulations included in the NHL's newly adopted transfer agreement with the Swedish Elite League prohibit the signing of free agents until then, so no contract has been signed or registered. News of the pending agreement broke on Friday after Zuccarello-Aasen's representatives at Newport Sports sent a letter to his other suitors, including Detroit, Toronto, Colorado, Chicago and Boston, thanking them for their interest.

Because of transfer agreement rules, we can't officially sign him until after the World Championships are over. But from all reports it is a done deal just waiting for the official announcement.

It's going to be interesting to hear Sam say Zuccarello-Aasen all season.

I'd be ok with him abbreviating it to just Aasen.

The north american announcers called him Ace-an during the olympics and world championships. Its Oh-son not Ace-an :-D Someone should tell that to Sam Rosen. Actually if you take the R out of Rosen they're last names are pronounced the same way

47 points isn't too much to expect of a guy that needs to be a second line player or bust?

I mean, I wouldn't guarantee that he'll be as good as Giroux, but if he succeeds, he will need to be at least be able to match what someone like Giroux has done so far and is probably expected to do in the future

What is the threshold MZA would have to pass to become the greatest Norwegian Hockey player ever? I'm drawing a blank in terms of remembering another Norwegian hockey player that made any significant contribution to the sport

Espen Knutsen is the best ever. OKT got to be up there, so the competition isn't high. Before that you have Anders Myrvold as the lone NHLer for a while, as far as I remember at least.

There were one older guy though, I think he had to quite because of health issues. Like in the 80's. Norways Gretzky. Anyone know anything about him? I can't find him.

Your right. Bjorn Skaare was a great great hockeyplayer. He was the best that ever came out of Norway even better than Knutsen. He's stats speak for themselves. Unfortunately he died in a car accident in the late 80's.

I get nothing from hockeydb on Skaare

Regardless, there isnt much competition for MZA. If he puts up 50 points a year for 6 years, he seems pretty much a lock for the "best player"

Norwegian defenceman Jonas Holos signed with the Avalanche yesterday. So I imagine that the MZA signing will be announced pretty soon as well.

It was probably him I thought of, I just have a vauge memory of there being a Norwegian players in the 70-80's who supposedly were really good but something happened....
