Proponents of a publicly owned sports and entertainment facility in downtown Kalamazoo appear to be refining their development plan and talking with some private developers as part of that effort.
Commissioners this past week let pass a deadline for approving a tax measure to present to county voters in August. Loud opposition from some and disagreement among board members led the project’s supporters to withdraw their request for a commission vote on the tax question earlier this month.
But now, ACW volunteers are redoubling their efforts to create a more concrete vision for developing a large portion of western downtown, Depta said. Western Michigan University and Downtown Tomorrow Inc., the real-estate arm of Downtown Kalamazoo Inc., own the nine-acre site in the city which has been blighted for more than a decade.
With a more fully developed plan, supporters hope to persuade a majority of county commissioners — and the public — to support the event center idea and the plan for the county to build it, Depta said.
