Not a bad choice, but there's a big risk. If you let Pleky go and you can't sign Marleau, then where does that leave you? Your centerline is Gomez (good) and then drops down to Moore. And there's nothing on the market that's able to do the job Pleky does.

Yeah thats the big problem... Marleau would be nice but somehow I can't see him signing here. The FAs other than Pleky and him aren't of the same level. I'd like Lombardi but he's more of a decent 2nd line center or good 3rd liner, he can't replace Plekanec.

It's simple:

On offence:
1st step: Don't sign Plecky, Metropolit and offer a contract to Moore, Pouliot
2nd step: Sign Patrick Marleau
3rd step: Trade Price, S. Kostitsyn and a second or first-round pick for NATHAN HORTON!

On defence: Getting rid of Hamrlik's contract by trading him for a pick (anyways, we got enough defensemen) for the team to be able to get under the salary cap.

Result:

On offence:
Cammalleri-Marleau-Horton
A.Kostitsyn-Gomez-Gionta
Pouliot-Moore-Pyatt
Pacioretty-Lapierre-Moen

Potential call-ups in case of injuries:
Ryan White, Desharnais, Trotter, Palushaj

On defence:
Markov-Subban
Spacek-O'Byrne
Hal Gill-Josh Gorges

Potential call-ups in case of injuries:
Mathieu Carle (i love how this guy plays), Yannick Weber

Goaltenders: Halak, Desjardins or Curtis Sanford (we try Desjardins first and if he doesnt do the job, we put Sanford)

With that, we have good depth, we no longer have any size problem and grit, we have two great scoring lines and 2 solid defensive lines that can contribute occasionnaly.

Let me now what you think of that.

I'm sure if it was so simple Gauthier would be leaps and bounds ahead of you. and A massive over payment for Horton.

Pouliot - Gomez - Gionta
Cammalleri - Arnott - Sharp
Moen - Moore - Lapierre
Eager - Pyatt - White

I'd kill to have a couple bigger guys who can produce offensively... guys like Arnott, Clowe, Horton, Sharp, Ladd etc.

Wait a minute,
Horton is 4M$ for the first year and i think Marleau would be around 7M$... you get Plekanec (2,75M$ caphit), Metropolit (1M$ caphit), Hamrlik (5.5M$ caphit), Mara (1,675 caphit), Price (0.85M$) and Bergeron's (0.750M$) contracts and you rebuy Laraque's contract (which makes 1M$ more) so it gives you 13,525M$ + the increase of the salary cap free. For about 2,5M$ you can pay off most of your AHL players you call up. It leaves us with 11M$+ this year's cap increase! Exactly what we need to sign both guys!!!!

Next year would be a pain in the a** though since Horton's salary gradually goes up and we'll have to decide if we try to re-sign Markov

BTW: i like the idea of signing Arnott if we cant get Marleau for under 6,75M$

lol dont worry, it was just sarcasm... although id be a pretty good GM i think (trading all the team when we lose and signing huge contracts when we're on a winning streak)

...no, he really can't.

People have to realize that besides scoring, Plekanec does some vital things for the Habs. He gets all the tough minutes. He gets most of the defensive draws. He gets the puck in the D-zone and gets it rolling towards the O-zone. He's been given a very, very tough job, and not everyone can do it.

Desharnais is not ready to do this kind of heavy lifting at the NHL level, and we should consider ourselves very lucky if he ever is.

Here's the new and improved Habs:
Trade proposals (do not take a cow):
to St Louis: Carey Price, Andrei Kostitsyn, Plek, Pouliot, the rest
to Montreal: Alex Pietrangelo (St Louis 2010 1st round pick or not whatever)
2010 UFA's: Kovy,Holmström, Artyukhin,Colby Armstrong, Nickol,Lombardi
2010/2011 Roster:
Forwards:
Ilya Kovalchuk - Gomez - Holmström
Cammalleri - Lombardi - Brian Gionta
Travis Moen - Dominic Moore - Colby Armstrong
Evgeny Artyukhin - Maxim Lapierre - Tom Pyatt
Scott Nichol

Defencemen:
Andrei Markov(5.75) - Emelin
Jaroslav Spacek (3.8) - Carlo Colaiacovo
Hal Gill(2.25) - Josh Gorges(1.1)
P.K. Subban(.875)

Goalies:
Jaroslav Halak(2.5)
Sanford(.6)

Buyouts:
Georges Laraque = 0.500

Cap Used = ~56.8

Montreal's 2010 first round draft picks:
Montreal Canadiens 2010 first round pick (27-30):Alexander Petrovic or Kirill Kabanov
St Louis 2010 first round pick (14): Dylan McIlrath or John McFarland
New York Rangers 2010 first round pick (10): Nino Niederreiter or Mark Pysyk
New York Rangers 2010 second round pick (40): Spooner

Somebody's going to have to pay for Montreal's failure in the playoffs. It sure as hell won't be Cammalleri, Gionta, Halak, Gill, Gorges, Markov, Moen, Lapierre, Pyatt, Moore, Spacek, Subban , or even Gomez. And most of them have been injured. So that's no excuse.

Gauthier if he has any sense will clean house.

And that means the rest have to go. Which means Plekanec, Price, Hamrlik, O'Byrne, Pouliot, K-bros, Metropolit, Darche, Bergeron, are gone. That's if you want to improve the team for next season's run for the cup by getting rid of under performers during the playoffs regardless of minor injuries. If they had injuries earlier they should have taken time off to heal for the playoffs instead of playing themselves into the ground so they could raise their stats for a better contract. If players keep getting injured by the time the playoffs come around or are too worn out do you want them on your team?

Trade them for whatever we can get and let's move on instead of wasting more time on the same old story year after year hoping that maybe one day they will improve. We've had enough time to see their overall talent, and we are wasting time waiting for these guys to come around and help us win a cup.

I say we build around Cammalleri, Gionta, Halak, Gill, Gorges, Markov, Moen, Lapierre, Pyatt, Moore, Spacek, Subban , Gomez and try to add some decent ufa's like Kovy, Armstrong, Nickol ,and others in trades(like Pietrangelo maybe or whatever other decent player we can get) and prospects like Emelin, etc.

Horton's salary cap is $4M for the next three years. His salary will increase but his salary cap remains the same.

I think Pleks will look a lot better in the playoffs with a big gritty winger on his side opposite of cammy. Andrei K has to go or be put with gio and gomez. Hamrlik can gtfo. Bring in emelin and our defense is very good. If they can somehow get Ryan Clowe from the sharks this team will go far. Or if they trade a goalie to st louis for Backes and then get Asham in ufa, u just added some size to your forward core. Either way I'd like somebody that can play big, not just be big.

I think it's sort of like Natey said about Hammer in another thread. We'll deal with the Gomez deal for now, but he may re-sign here for dirt cheap once the contract is over, granted he may not be the same player then, but if he is, it's worthwhile imo.

If we could find a way to dump Roman Hamrlik...

Trade Carey Price and Andrei Kostitsyn to San Jose for Ryane Clowe, 27th overall+
Trade 27th overall for Dustin Byfuglien

Byfuglien-Plekanec-Cammalleri
Clowe-Gomez-Gionta
Pouliot-Moore-Lapierre
Moen-Pyatt-White

Markov-Subban
Spacek-O'Byrne
Gill-Gorges

Halak
UFA

We would be close to 54M$. I think that we would be able to sign a veteran goalie, buy out Laraque and add a couple depth players with the cap space remaining.

Lots of topics in this thread, love it.

As for the top 6...I would let Pleks go and throw the money at Kovalchuk. Obviously our second C would suffer as a result, but we pretty much went without a second center for this entire playoff!

As for Lats, I'm happy he is gone. Anytime people point the finger at others then they should look in a mirror. Bottom line, Martin is the coach, you should do what the coach wants. If you do what the coach wants, then you'll play. And besides, Lats will never be a key player come playoff time imo.
