Intresting....not often you see both teams trade with each other.

Another Blue liner in the prospect pool that is alreadly very crowded to begin with. I guess you can never have enough blue chippers, I wish it was another forward though. we shall see how it pans out.

Maybe it was to replace Ilkka Heikkinen.

Did it hit the net?

Niemi was a top-50 THN guy from 2008 and a projected 2nd rounder.

I was actually interested in him because of his big shot and size.

But he was kinda bleh during the WJC. I know it's not the best barometer, but it makes you wonder why the Isles, who have injury issues with DeHaan and Hamonic and Ness being so-so, are willing to trade a defenseman they just drafted less than two years ago.

Not a bad trade.

Supposedly he wasn't going to sign a pro contract with the Piles so they get a free 6th rounder out of it.

Yah, I'm curious as to why they Isles would want to trade him for a less valuable commodity.

Good trade by Slats.

We get a decent prospect back for a 6th round pick which likely would not have landed us a decent prospect.

According to some Isles posters, he was not going to sign with them.

The Rangers and Niemi have agreed to terms on a contract. Niemi is expected to attend the Rangers' annual Prospect Development Camp this summer in the days following the NHL Entry Draft.

Saw this kid play during the World Juniors Tourney in Saskatoon and Regina this past Xmas. Impressive skill set...didn't know about the injury history (which could be a problem)...but probably a good prospect.

Aren't the big knocks on him his skating and defensive play? I think that was the thing with him his draft year.

Defensive play I know was a knock. Now I think its health issues.

Definitely. He's still a decent prospect but the Isles certainly had higher hopes when they drafted him. Rumor was that he didn't want to sign with the Islanders.

Im curious to see what you consider a bluechipper, because when you say "can never have enough bluechippers" it implies we have many when, personally, I dont think we have a single one.

This guy certainly isnt one.

Niemi is slow as ish, guys. I mean like Redden looks like Phil Housely next to this guy.

And that was even before his injuries.

Just a warning.

Katie Strang who is the Isles beat reporter said the Islanders were not going to offer him a contract so I guess they figured they could get something out of him. Knowing the Islanders luck, he'll turn into a hall of famer.
