Yeah, of course. No one would want their 3rd rounder to turn into a 6th but if it doesnt work out than getting something back is better than nothing.

I think some of you are reading into this way too much. This guy isn't even close to making Sangs expendable. Management probably figured this guy would be a better use of our 6th rounder then whoever would be there on draft day. That's all it is.

It's just the philosophy around HF. Acquiring one guy makes another one expendable, and is typically considered a precursor to a "bigger" trade. Despite the fact that that's rarely the case, it's how we roll here.

Fair enough.

Is this the first time the Rangers and Islanders have ever dealt directly????

Somewhere earlier in this thread, someone said that they also made a trade in 72. Didn't say who the players were though.

EDIT: We traded Ron Stewart to the Fishies for cash.

Watch the Isles draft the next Zetterberg with that 6th round pick.

Also to the Piles fans who are claiming that the "he didnt want to sign with the Isles" was a rumor made up here... Some of your own fans thought it as well.

Maybe Slats was confused and thought he was getting a backup goalie...

you know Dustin Byfuglien started as a defenseman (scored 19 goals) and then they converted him to forward. At least that was how he was listed. Maybe Sather wants the Finnish Byfuglien?

Good trade, I've always liked Niemi. He should have no trouble getting over his injuries, he's a big boy.

*edit
I think it's also fair to point out, with a guy big like Niemi, he'll be a late bloomer.

Chris Botta Islander Point Blank stated two weeks ago they most likely weren't going to offer him a contract.

Can you provide a link on that? I am not doubting he was asking for more money but amusing since he hasn't done much to ask for an inflated amount. He had a good scouting report in the draft but comments from some scouts recently weren't so positive. Which could be him recovering from injuries when they saw him

He may be a legit prospect but the speed of his shot isn't evidence of that.

It is a skill worth mentioning. Players like Babchuk and MAB have used it to their advantage. I am not saying that will solely get him a look in the NHL but it is a skill that not everyone has.

Loney was a waiver claim, if I'm not mistaken.

This may turn out to be a trade that doesn't help either team. (Lots of them out there)

No you wouldn't. The Coyotes decided last fall that they weren't going to sign Jared. He was flat out brutal at their camp. He barely looked like an ECHL level player.

Loney was a waiver wire pickup from the Ducks at the 95 Trade Deadline as far as I remember.

another slats reclaimation project.

just for the record, this guy is pretty brutal. his skating is awful and hes got health issues.

just like buying anything in a bargain bin in the closeout isle, the price may be great but.... do you need it and is it any good ?

no and no here.

when slats starts bottom feeding in the isles cesspool, then were in real trouble.

We gave up a 6th rounder for a 19 year old offensive Dman with a big frame, an NHL level shot, and health and skating issues... Health issues we have no control over but I doubt his skating won't improve over the next 2 /3 years or so.
