While diving has always happened in hockey, we're just at the beginning of the truly absurd stuff we've seen over the last 10 or so years. They can still nip it in the bud if they get on it and really crack down on guys.
While there's some subjectivity involved, they need to start suspending guys for egregious stuff. For example, Carcillo acting like he was highsticked when it didn't even touch him.
One of the problems that the refs really don't want to be wrong on a diving call. I think they'd be more likely to call it if they were able to punish diving a number of ways. If something is probably a dive but borderline they should be able to call the play dead and treat it like icing with the face off going to the offender's offensive zone. That is something that they'd call a lot more and it would embarrass the player that got called.
In addition, all diving penalties should be reviewed by the league. The first offense should be a warning/fine and then, after that, a one game suspension.

That's not a racial slur. The grease from an Italian dude's hair would screw up the ice. It's a safety issue, really. That's why Luongo is only allowed to play goalie.
