The people who claim what you just did, "Tried to gain weight, eat constantly, and lift hard, but it's impossible", simply are not eating enough. You think you're eating enough, but you're not doing enough. You need to write it down. Keep track of it. Find your BMR and eat 500 calories over this each day. But eat clean, quality calories and watch your macronutrient ratios. If you want to know what I'm talking about, let me know.
