I would have to say Adam Oates off the top of my head. I don't count Gretzky because he left junior hockey to play in the WHA, other wise Wayne would have been obviously went first over all.

Joe Mullen

Regular Season : 1062 games, 502 goals, 561 assists, 1063 points
Playoffs...........: 143, games, 60, goals, 46 assists, 106 points

And a couple of Rings, not bad for an undrafted Player.

He is in the US Hockey Hall of Fame as well right?

Great list, pnep. Don't want to rain on your parade and it may not be pertinent, but many on your list weren't eligible for the draft.

From 1963-1969, the NHL Amateur draft included players who were not on a team's list, hadn't been signed to an "A", "B" or "C" form.

An "A" form gave a team the opportunity to get a player on their reserve list for a 12 month period (November to October).

A "B" form was the same as an "A" form, but got the player a camp invite plus the right to demand a contract at the end of camp. It was rarely used because it gave power to the player.

A "C" form was the most used, and generally ended up turning into a Standard Player's Contract. It was the form promising young players signed.

So a kid like Ernie Hicke:

1. Was a Regina Pats winger, so he automatically belonged to Montreal long before 1967 (which would have been his draft year)

2. Was likely signed to a "C" form and then signed a Standard Player's Contract before going to Houston in 1967 fall.

A player had to be 18 to sign a "C" form.

So, Brad Park COULD have been a Maple Leaf, they chose not to sign him to an "A", "B" or "C" form and THEN he became eligible for the draft.

This was the case for all kinds of players, even technically some born in 1949 which is universally accepted as the first real Entry Draft. Among the 1949 born players who were not eligible for that draft due to signing "A", "B" or "C" forms were Doug Acomb (Toronto) and Randy Manery (Detroit).

The 1948 birthdates were even more impressive, with guys like Guy Lapointe, Jerry Korab, Jude Drouin, Don Luce and many others not being eligible. Plus, of course, Orr.

Hope this helps.

Not just the US Hockey Hall of Fame, he's in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. First ballot.

First, and so far only American to ever score 500 goals in a career.

Wayne Gretzky by a mile.

Bobby Orr (who was snatched up as a kid just before the draft system was put into place) would be number 2.

Beyond that, Peter Stastny is another easy choice. He is one of the most underrated players in history.

All 3 players were not drafted for different reasons, none having anything to do witht heir perceived potential however.

Dino ciccarelli would be my choice in that department. Amazing he was never drafted. Honorable mentions to Oates, Mullen, Kerr, Salming and Joseph.
