Here is the TSN link:

It's at the bottom of the article under other things Bettman discussed.

dag, I don't remember many people thinking it was going to drop. I think most thought it would be very similar (within a million) of what it was this year.

Bettman must be mistaken. Someone forget to tell Gary that TB (or was it Atlanta?) lost $40m this year.

If the cap does rise $2million, signings just got a bit easier for us (and by that I mean Staal and Girardi)

If these lines can be done, I think we should do it.

Dubinsky-Christensen-Gaborik
Kovalchuk-Anisimov-Zuccarello
Avery-Drury-Callahan
Prust-Boyle-Shelley
Byers/Voros

Staal-Girardi
Rozsival-Del Zotto
McDonagh-Gilroy

Lundqvist
Hedberg/Biron/whoever

Redden -> Hartford. this is key. While some may think its not possible right now, I have a hard time believing that Redden will be a Ranger come opening night. Tortorella has put alot of pressure on Sather (who really put it on himself for the ****ing deal) and hes gotta realize that whats truly keeping this team anchored from any significant progress is Redden and his contract. Hes gotta send him to Hartford.

Key additions would be:

Kovalchuk
Zuccarello-Aasen
McDonagh (hopefully)
backup goalie

Key substractions:

Prospal
Jokinen
Redden

We would get younger and more skilled, provided it works under the cap.

Based on that, I think we have improved pretty well. We would address our most glaring need, which is above all else, secondary scoring.

Adding Kovalchuk and the leading scorer of the SEL and putting them on your second line? Id do that in a heartbeat.

No Marleau's, no Plekanec's, etc.

Concerned MZA won't have enough room on the ice? Kovalchuk will create plenty for him.

And before I hear how Kovalchuk is an impossibility cap-wise still:

AUTO-GENERATED CAPGEEK.COM LINES
FORWARDS
* ILYA KOVALCHUK ($9.000m) / Marian Gaborik ($7.500m) / Chris Drury ($7.050m)
Ryan Callahan ($2.300m) / Sean Avery ($1.938m) / Brandon Dubinsky ($1.850m)
Donald Brashear ($1.400m) / Aaron Voros ($1.000m) / * MZA ($0.900m)
Artem Anisimov ($0.822m) / * Erik Christensen ($0.750m) / * Jody Shelley ($0.725m)
Brian Boyle ($0.525m) / * Brandon Prust ($0.500m)
DEFENSEMEN
Michal Rozsival ($5.000m) / * Marc Staal ($3.250m)
* Daniel Girardi ($2.500m) / Matt Gilroy ($1.750m)
Michael Del Zotto ($1.087m) / * Ryan McDonagh ($0.850m)
GOALTENDERS
Henrik Lundqvist ($6.875m) / * BACKUP GOALTENDER ($1.000m)
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS
(these totals are compiled using the bonus cushion)
ROSTER: 22; PAYROLL: $58.572m; CAP ROOM: $0.441m BONUSES: $0.212m

Includes Brashear's cap hit, but I don't consider him to be on the roster. Brashear + Pick for lower Pick gives you an additional $1.4 million for a total of ~$1.8 million.

$1m allotted for a backup goalie.

Gave McDonagh a cap hit of $850k, he may also have bonuses.

Could save another ~$1m by switching Gilroy for Sanguinetti.

Very doable... could even give Kovalchuk another $500k without too much issue.

EDIT: 6 defensemen because I just think that's just the way Torts runs it. Additional d-man could be added by making one of the above moves.

yep, and, if you make kovalchuk sign a longer term deal like 15 years or something, you can bring the cap hit down to ~6 mil

I refuse to get my hopes up on this one. But I will say this; if we have cap maneuvering to do, Brashear needs to be dealt to a cap floor team, and Gilroy needs to be in Hartford.

he is an impossibility if you actually think the Rangers will field those defense pairings. There is no way that Sather can not sign at least one d-man, there are so many decent UFAs that it would be stupid not to.

The problem is getting there without exceeding the summer overage. That's the impossible part.

Personally, there's nothing I want to see less than (a.) yet another crippling contract and (b.) yet another superstar solution while essentially fielding a clone of last years' uncompetitive mess.
