Blake Wheeler on the block

Quote:
Blake Wheeler, a restricted free agent July 1, carried a cap hit of $2.825 million last season. He is a prime candidate to be dealt, following a sophomore season that was maddeningly inconsistent
http://www.boston.com/sports/hockey/...bruins/?page=2

If the Bruins want to free up cap space for next season and don't want to pay Wheeler, the Rangers were very interested in signing Wheeler as a free agent two years ago so maybe they will be interested in him again. The Rangers need size throughout their line-up. Wheeler can play both wings.

Salary dump for Boston. Wouldn't give up a top young roster player or a top prospect or top pick but if Boston wanted get something, then the Rangers should explore it.

I think he could be a good fit if he comes cheap and finds more consistency to his game.

"maddeningly inconsistent" He'll fit in perfect here.

In all seriousness, I could see the Rangers pursuing him at the right price.

I think if he puts it together, he's more of a 30-35 guy.

But he's 24, so if he can't get the consistency going this season, I'd be surprised if he ever did.

I'd take a shot at him though. Depends on the price.

I would trade for him depending on price of course.

Would draft picks do? Of course not our first rounder. But other picks and maybe a prospect?

I'm a fan of this guy, wouldn't mind seeing him in Ranger blue at all.

I'd be all over this. Wheeler looked great in his rookie year, but he struggled this year like most 2nd year players do. I'd be surprised if he were actually available.

Something around Girardi maybe? Wasn't he rumored to be a key piece in the alleged deal for Kessel?

How would you feel about Boston's 1st (#15) + Wheeler's rights for the #10 pick?

I would deal Girardi straight up for Wheeler for sure. Perhaps Gilroy would be an optiosn as well

I would also do Wheeler and the 15th for the 10th

Who knows what is gonna happen with this guy though. I read they are likely to buy out Ryder too. Dont want any part in that just a note

Yep. They need to clear cap space so Sangs is a perfect candidate. Wheeler is young and actually has nice upside. It would actually be a good move.

Definitely would be a good move (depending on who Boston wants back) but Sather won't do it because he's a young right handed shot (which the team could use), is 6'5" and >200lbs, and has more than enough time to possibly develop into a premier power forward!!

Sounds like a potential deal between the Bruins and the Leafs (knowing the way Burke likes to build his teams).

Yea that quote jumped out at me as well.

If he's not bona fide top 6 what do we need him for?

I'd take the deal of the #15 and the rights to Wheeler for the #10 and run.

Suppose the Rangers want to move salary...does something like the rights to Girardi and a small/moderate piece for the rights to Wheeler make sense? Looking for some input from the Boston fans reading this

I remember when Gretzky went off the board and drafted this kid 6 years ago. He's been a 20/20 guy his first 2 years. Odd how his + - dropped from +36 to -4 this past year though. What is Wheelers upside? He's still only 24.

I think Wheeler could be a solid 2nd line forward that pots 25 goals and creates space on the ice for his teammates. He's not a true power-forward in the sense that he's ridiculously gritty, but he's not charmin soft either.
