Its just really negative to think we are 3 years away from winning a playoff series. No, its stupid. If you turn out to be right and we can't win a single playoff series for 3 years, you should be ashamed and we should all be rooting for another team.
Why? Our core would still be extremely young. Keith and Seabrook have 3+years on DD and JJ. It's going to take time and patience from everyone, myself included.
Everybody keeps using Chi as an example of what this Franchise can be but I see one big problem. We don't have an sniper like Kane anywhere in this franchise. You can compare a lot of people in Chi to LA but we don't have that shooter.
Since when is Kane a sniper? He's a playmaker who doesn't play a lick of defense.

I'm pretty sure they would calla him one dimensional.
These are the people who aren't calling Stoll one dimensional for just doing faceoffs
I'd like to see an estimated salary figure with Kovy, DD, Kopi, JJ, and an entire roster for a few years from now.
That isn't important. The cap will continue to grow and their deals will get better as time goes on. You really can't look more than a couple of years in the future with a moving cap.
If the Kings end up against the cap next year, they could buy out Smyth and save $3 million against the cap. They could use that money for Johnson if needed. Smyth should be a 2nd line winger next season and maybe Moller or Loktionov can take his spot in a couple of years.
Way too many ifs beyond a couple years. What if the cap goes up $4 millin next year? With the increased rating this post season, advertisement revenue could increase. Attendance could also increase next year.
Not taking a legitimate shot at Kovalchuk would be an epic fail by Dean. If the Kings match the best offer and Kovalchuk signs somewhere else, I would be fine with it. I'm starting to believe that Dean will do everything possible for Kovalchuk, but it will still be up to Kovalchuk to sign with LA.

You lost me at the cap will continue to grow. Says who? In this god awful economy? Thank god DL has his eye on the cap 3 years from now because it is very crucial to layer your contracts and not to overpay too many players.

The cap is about to go up $2 million after everyone said it would drop significantly. Just google the cap predictions for 2010-2011.
The cap will continue to grow. The NHL ratings are up big and the VS contract will be up soon. A new TV deal could increase the revenue signifcantly for the NHL. Revenue increase = cap increase.
Kovalchuk is worth his cap hit. There aren't a lot of consistent 40 goal scorers in the NHL. Kovalchuk, Doughty, Kopitar and Brown are worth their cap hits. Simmonds and Johnson will not make that kind of money, they are not going anywhere.

Don't bet on it. Cap increase in this economy= NHL lockout. Either way, DL is smart to be looking a few years ahead.

Who is this 40 goal scorer that the Kings are grooming? Kovalchuk is available now and the Kings have the cap space now. I think Dean had this in mind with his current contract situation. There will always be a #4 defenseman available via FA/trade, but not too many #1 forwards are available for cash only.

I don't get this. The cap is tied to revenue, if the cap is going up, then revenue is increasing. Doesn't matter what the rest of the economy is doing.

That's where I disagree. I consider Kovalchuk a 1st line winger but not a #1 forward. Your #1 should be a 2 way center. The Kings have the cap space now but how much will they have after they pay DD 6-7, Kovy 8, Kopi 6.7 and fill out the rest of the roster?

Plenty. 40-50% of your cap space will be with your top 5-6 players. That is how you build a team in the cap era. You can't be afraid to pay your core top dollar.
Kovalchuk, Kopitar, Doughty, Bernier/Quick, Brown and Johnson will be the core. They should make the most money. If Simmonds continues to grow, then he can replace Brown.
That is why you have to continue to draft well so that you have low cost players available to fill the roster. Moller, Hickey, Loktinov, Schenn, Clifford, etc. That is the key to building long term success.

I'd much rather see a 2nd line center in that core than Kovalchuk but I agree on drafting is key to long term success.

Schenn may very well replace Brown then. I just don't see any #2 centers just waiting to be signed. You would lose Simmonds or Johnson in a trade for one as well. Teams just don't give top centers away.
I still don't see where Kovalchuk fits. CHI is a prime example of needing 4 or 5 defenseman that can move the puck and 4 solid lines. Depth> 1 dimensional superstars.
If Kopitar spent his entire career in Atlanta, everyone would be calling him "one dimensional" right now.
Kopitar took the time to learn the defensive side. Kovalchuk still floats.
Because he spent the first 7 1/2 years of his career doing whatever he wanted on chicken **** teams. If Kopitar can learn to play defense(post-Crawford), so can Kovalchuk.
I'm pretty sure they would calla him one dimensional.
These are the people who aren't calling Stoll one dimensional for just doing faceoffs
People are saying that Stoll is not one dimensional because he is at least two dimensional? The nerve. As for me, I have never met him but I have seen him live and he looks pretty 3D to me.
His +10 this season says hi and the only thing that floats is the puck hitting the back of the net.
The only time +/- is relevant to me is during fantasy hockey. Kovalchuk floats almost as bad as Pavel Bure did but hopefully TM can get more out of him.
He doesn't usually lie out right like some other Kings brass (Liewieke), but he leaves himself a lot of outs which each statement. They are so well crafted, you can read almost anything into his statements.
Don't get me wrong, I love reading his comments and enjoy the effort in trying to decipher the true meaning behinds his words, but he uses a lot of double speak to confuse the jury, i.e. fans.
I'm getting a little p.o.'d with the lawyer slams, Syd. If I recall correctly your namesake was the captain of the red carpet escort service when he played here. Does that mean you lay down too?
Double speak to confuse people is only used by piss-poor lawyers who can't formulate the necessary arguments to clarify the issues in the way they want a jury to see them.
There is a big difference. JDM is right in that DL leaves himself what we call "wiggle room." What you need to do as fans is learn to read between the lines of what DL says and remember that he will not give away his position for exposition to the media and general public if it will inhibit his chances of securing the player or making the move he wants. That is not double speak, but a highly educated person walking (speaking) a fine line.
Ther are alot of less recent examples of DL saying things which later haven't been borne out by his subsequent actions, but that has very little to do with his education as a lawyer.
