It was rumoured that the Sens last offer was a 5 year contract paying him a total of 20 mil $ . That's 4 mil cap hit . IMO , anything over that is big time overpayment. I wasn't happy with the long-term either considering his playing style and injury proneness but at least the cash was ok.

I'm sure LA will call him, but probably not in the ballpark of throwing $5 million at him, so I am most positive that they will end up passing.

Sens Chirp Update

a bit on the other side of the story, SensChirp writes about Volchenkov a bit.

Quote:
Despite indications from a Caps Insider late last week, there is still a very real possibility Anton Volchenkov signs in Washington this summer.

It may have been a case of posturing on the part of Caps organization but according to this article from Inside Hockey as well as a couple key contacts, they are still very interested in Volchenkov. In fact, not only has Volchenkov put his Ottawa house up for sale, he has actually been spotted in Washington the last little while, potentially looking for a new place to live.

Certainly something to keep an eye on and another option for Murray should he decide to move Volchenkov's negotiating rights before July 1.

On the Spezza front there isn't a whole lot to report. Murray will listen to offers for Jason Spezza but is not actively shopping his number one centre. Spezza has confirmed that he did not officially ask for a trade at any point and is willing to return to Ottawa this fall.

A few of you have emailed asking about a deal with the Bruins for the 2nd overall pick. I have heard nothing about a deal with Boston and to be honest, it seems highly unlikely to me. Bruins don't have a ton of cap space and moving Spezza within the division is just asking for trouble.

Well the Blues certainly have space. Don't know if they pursue him hard though. If he's not going to the Caps it'll be interesting to see where he does go assuming its not back to the Sens.

Washington wants to save that space to get a crack at Markov...

I don't know if I should put a sarcastic smiley, or not. Ovechkin and he are good friends and it's not like he sucks...

Jackman's probably as close as you can get without being 6'6". He did learn from him. He was just as mean before the lockout imo. And Polak. Actually now that I think of it, if we add Volchenkov then we'd have a pretty tough top 6. Even better if we get rid of Brewer. Jackman + EJ + Polak + Volchenkov.
Damn that sounds nice.

I doubt it. Volchenkov is exactly what they need in Washington.

(and exactly what we need in Pittsburgh)

Wrong. Without Phillips to cover his back and a system to help him do what he does, he'd be one man amongst an entire group that don't do what he does (and really, they don't need him to. Defensively responsible and a little tough doesn't translate into Volchenkov and Volchenkov only). I'd be happier taking a healthy Willie Mitchell or Paul Martin than Anton Volchenkov.

Undoubtedly, but it's not just him. That whole system, in every game I've watched, looks designed for people to block those shots. The Washington system isn't like that. Sure, a little of it will translate, but he won't be anywhere near the force he is in Ottawa once Boudreau is done with him, and he doesn't have the other assets to become a valuable player in that system.

I think 4 million is pretty much the right price. Volchenkov, although an injury risk, is still a good deal better than someone like Orpik at 3.7, and no one seems to have much of an issue with that deal.
4.5 is something I don't see many good teams able to pay for a D-man who only brings defense, and when we get to 5 million we're talking major overpayment considering impact and risks.

If Volchenkov would sign a 5 year, 4 million per deal with Pittsburgh, I would do that and deal Orpik for the best asset package we could find that includes a cheap and capable winger for our top6.

Can't really see the Kings being all that interested. With Matt Greene, Rob Scuderi, Jack Johnson, and Drew Doughty on the roster all capable of filling PK roles, I think the money would be better spent elsewhere.

Can't see Washington not signing this guy this summer. He would fit their biggest need. As I've said in other threads it wouldn't surprise me if the Caps traded for his rights before free agency began.

If that's what he was looking for, Ottawa would have him signed already!
