Tyler Cuma, D

for

Calvin de Haan, D

Cuma has a lower ceiling but much more likely to reach his potential than de Haan, who clearly has more offensive upside and can run our PP once he gets here in a few years. Cuma is more NHL ready, and the Islanders already have Mark Streit, one of the best PP d-men in the league. Pairing Cuma with Hamonic could be one of the best shutdown pairs in the league.

So why would Minnesota do this deal?

Tyler Cuma is a pretty sure bet to make it to the NHL. The question seems to be which pairing he'll make it to.
Our cupboards are pretty bare so you would be asking us to give up one of our better prospects for a high risk/high reward player? Not to mention that our depth at prospect is nearly all at Defense.

If you would change that D prospect for an Offensive prospect we might actually listen to that proposal.

Islanders wouldn't even consider this. They gave up several picks to ensure they added De Haan, who had played with Tavares in the past. Add in the fact that Tyler Cuma has regressed since his knee injury and was beaten out by De Haan for a spot at the WJHC despite being a year younger and it makes the gap wider.

Cuma has very little value right now. Theres no point to try to trade him because of it.
