Rangers sign Derek Stepan (Post #396)

EJ Hradek just said on NHL live that Rangers are very close to signing Derek Stepan....

What!?

So the guy with one post who reported the rumor of Stepan signing with NYR wasn't much of a 'false' rumor. Say he signs, he can't stay in college, correct? I believe once you sign an NHL contract you lose your college eligibility.

That is correct. Once you have a pro contract, no more college hockey. Well, im glad Stepan will apparently be in Hartford next year if this is true, looks like Hagelin might be our only Hobey Baker candidate.

Correct. It also means the Rangers start covering all his expenses related to playing. For example, Mcdonagh has to pay his own way to come to the Rangers prospect camp in order to maintain his NCAA eligibility.

Hradek said he received it via Twitter from a very reliable source... Sorry, but I missed the name of the source which he gave...

Getting Stepan and McDonagh into Hartford would be awesome. I think they've pretty much accomplished all that's needed developmental-wise there. Getting Stepan to center Grachev would only be a good thing in my eyes.

So are you from Wisconsin campus or something?

We didn't all mean to attack you in the last thread, but no source was really posted at all and we didn't have very much info to go with. Stick around the boards, bro!

Stepan getting another year in Wisconsin wouldn't be the worst thing, he'd be expected to carry the offense and would certainly be the first option for every play.

McD on the other hand, probably better off in Hartford.

Woohoo! I'm so happy.

Didn't think he would turn pro. Good for him. He's not Kreider who is raw. There are some things he needs to work on but nothing that says he can't/not ready to play in Hartford next year.

At least if he's in Hartford and we lose a Center, he can be called up... Awesome... May get to see him sooner rather than later.

Interesting. I would guess he started talking to the Rangers who offered him good money and said "look, if you can show you're ready this fall, you'll make this team".

And it's tough to go from losing the national championship to thinking about turning pro...I imagine both him and McDonagh were thinking "damn, so close, I want another year to try again" right afterwards.

At any rate, I hope he's ready for the jump to pro hockey, be it the AHL or maybe even the NHL.

Interesting, keep us updated!

How is the campus of Wisconsin taking this rumor so far?

I also have to wonder if Stepan signs, whether that impacts McDonagh's decision

I really don't see how it wouldn't. With Stepan out, McDonagh is one of Wisconsins only hopes this season and with some of the stars of Wisconsin out of town, McDonagh might follow through.

as was I. Getting those two signed might significantly alter Sather's offseason game plan, if it exists beyond smoking cigars and fishing.

I would think it does...a familiar face in camp and Hartford (assuming he may need some time there.)

I wouldn't be surprised if they were considering their options jointly as opposed to independently of each other.

Could be, depends on if they're really friends or not

even if they're not friends they'd still probably seriously factor in what one of them is doing considering if one leaves than wisconsin will be really bad next year.
