Best decision this kid as ever made. When you dominate the WCHA, NCAA and the World Juniors, there's really nothing left to prove.

The trick there is even if he is incredible in camp and makes it impossible to send him down, can he sustain it for the whole season.

MDZ hit the wall last year after a terrific start. I like that they kept him up and gave him the experience.
Not that I'm saying you're wrong, but MDZ had to deal with a compressed schedule last year due to the Olympics. Stepan wouldn't have that.

The Olympics probably should have helped MDZ..... hey its hard to go to the NHL, everyones faster, bigger, more games, more $$$ and hotter chicks to distract you....

He did great overall. Excited to see what happens next season

I'm glad we're close to signing Stepan, and I hope we sign McD this off-season too, but Stepan has no business making the jump to the Rangers without going to the A first unless we suffer some serious injuries in camp, and McD really should take some time in the A too but I guess it's more realistic for him to make it if we don't sign any defenseman and bury Redden.

It's not like Stepan is going to come in an be a more effective first or second line center than Christensen, Dubinsky, or Anisimov could be...Drury is a lock for the 3rd line center spot, and why put Stepan on the 4th when he could be the first line center in Hartford?

They have business if they earn a spot.

Playing a year or so in the AHL shouldn't be a mandatory thing...if players show they're ready then give them a roster spot. If they show they need some work, then send them to the AHL.

Not every player develops the same way. I'd personally guess that Stepan would need some time in Hartford, but if he comes to camp and looks good and earns a spot on the NHL roster, then that's what he deserves.

Competition is good. The way I see it, today. The Rangers have some spots UP FOR GRABS

Let the guy who wants it the most and steps up earn the spot.

If he pwns Christ out of his job good for him

The thing to me is camp alone isn't a good scouting tool. He can look good in practice and he can look good against AHL talent disguised in NHL uniforms, just like Grachev did last year, but the Rangers have no reason to rush him to the NHL considering while they don't have quality at center, they have quantity. Lets see him in the AHL for at least half a season before we start pinning him to be a top 6 player next season.

I think the *insert 2010 Rangers AHL affiliate here* could be good for Stepan. They could use a good center, he could learn the organization, and be a centerpiece of their offense if he transitions well.

That being said, I don't know if it would be BETTER than another year in college.

Christensen could have a subpar camp, he's not going to lose his roster spot to a kid out of college, period.

If Stepan makes the team, he could probably win the center spot for Gaborik over Christensen I'm sure, but he'd be taking a roster spot from someone else.

Taking a roster spot from someone else doesn't really apply if he did all the steps to earn it.

Jokinen is gone. Prospal is nice, but he really does nothing for the future. Who is he stealing a spot from now? Voros? Parenteau? Boyle? Shelley?

I guess it will have to be stolen from the inevitable 35+ UFA Sather signs to stop gap the team to struggle into playoff contention.

Christensen/Dubi
Stepan
Anisimov
Drury

Your 4 centers.

Im all for the young guys to start contributing asap, but is Stepan really good enough to center our first line as a rookie?

I would love Stepan and McDonagh to make this team right out of camp. Thatd be great, and then Grachev possibly to get a call midseason.

Kreider and McDonagh could have something to say about that.

I would be shocked if Stepan didn't need at least one year in the AHL.

In my opinion, let Stepan, McDonagh and Grachev all have a year in the AHL together.

Let them have some playing time together and school some old timers before they make the big jump.

Me too, but I don't like the idea that basically all prospects should be required to play a year in the AHL. If a guy earns a spot, he earns a spot. If he struggles later in the season, then send him down.

Stepan is not, I repeat, NOT, GOING TO BE ON THE RANGERS IN THE 2010-2011 SEASON

It's the AHL or Wisconsin for him next season depending on if he signs or not.

Looks like SNY picked up on the story.

http://www.snyrangersblog.com/2010/0...h-the-rangers/

He says its not definite but likely that Stepan signs

NICE! Now get him a right handed shooting, LW sniper for him to pass to.

Anyone know where we can get one of those without giving up assets?... What, Kovalchuk, who?

From what I've seen of Kreider, I don't think he'll ever play in the AHL.

What makes you so sure? Just because it is unlikely that it will happen doesn't mean it's out of the realm of possibility. Imo Stepan could probably step into the NHL right now and not look out of place. It's a long-shot, but not impossible
