Why Russia until the Olympics? I though you have to play with the best to beat the best.

Because the NHL is leaning against letting players participate in the Olympic. Although imo they will let them go in the end. So the only safe bet of participating would be not to be in the NHL.

Think of what would happen if NHL didn't allow players to play in Vancouver. It would be PR disaster and any players boycotting the NHL would be declare national hero

He has nothing to prove there. He'll be remembered as the guy who played for stats and money.

I'm not sure what to make of this but I'm sure this is a good time for the "Not sure if serious" gif to make an appearance. How is a line of Nash-Crosby-Staal something you'd see in an exhibition game exactly?

It's a shame this thread wasted everyone's time. According to a reliable source (that drunk guy that USED to work at GM that hangs around at Boston Pizza getting tanked all the time) Brian Burke already has Kovalchuk, Ovechkin, Bobby Ryan and Stamkos on their way to T.O. Course he had to drop Kulemin, Mitchell, Bozak and Kaberle to get them. He said he can't help but feel ripped off.

I don't believe this for a second. He'll sign an NHL contract.

IIHF doesn't restrict players from Olympics based on their commercial ventures. Ovechkin and other Russians have already declared they will play in Sochi no matter what.

He's going to sign in Philadelphia for 1 million dollars, play net, win a stanley cup and then go to Russia and play for 14 million tax free!
But to be honest, I think he signs in LA or Russia

Marian Gaborik is payed 7.5 Million a year, do people think that Kovalchuk will get any less than that? With the cap reportely going up I don't think it's a stretch to say 7.5-8.5 million a year.

Does he have to wait until the 1st to sign with a Russian team? If he doesn't then there is no way he is going over because he would already signed.

maybe he signs a 2 year 19 mil deal in NHL and will go back to KHL if the NHL doesn't confirm that it will go to Sochi.

That's a very good point, I never thought of that.
They are pretty equal in skill, but Gaborik has injury problems, so Kovalchuk should easily get $7.5 mil.

But he might take a discount to be on a cup contender.

The latest one from Sport Express Daily in Russia quotes Kovalchuk’s reported agent in his homeland, Yuriy Nikolaev, as confirming talks with SKA St. Petersburg on a three-year deal, but disputing the report from earlier this week of an offer of three years for $42 million.
So Kovalchuk's Russian agent want him to play in Russia. Of course he does, his Russian agent won't get paid if he satys in the NHL. I'm sure his North American agent want him to stay in the NHL, only one of them can get commission.

Not going to believe it until I hear a direct quote from Kovalchuk.

If all he cared about was money then he would have stayed in Atlanta.

Wait he has nothing to prove in the Olympics? Or he will be remembered as the guy who played for money and stats cause he wants to play in the Olympics?

How quickly people forget about a player whose career started:

Age 20: 64gp, 18g, 19a, 37pts, +19, 11:38 ice time/game
Age 21: 81gp, 26g, 32a, 58pts, +7, 16:23 ice time/game
Age 22 --> current: KHL
drawing a blank who is that?

why am i the only one who thinks that this guy is asking for too much money. Which team can he play on without sinking them. He can't even carry a team like he tries to. Atlanta is better without him, he did nothing in the playoffs, and he's still a defensive liability. i too want him playing for the toronto maple leafs!
