MLD 2010 DRAFT Part I

ATD-ML 2010 - THE MINOR LEAGUE DRAFT
Drafting those all-time greats overlooked in the main ATD

The draft is completed

The draft will last 24 rounds. You must draft 2 goalies, 6 defensemen, 12 forwards and a coach, with 3 additional picks to be used for whatever position(s) you want.

Trading is allowed. Trades must be equal in numbers, 2 picks for 2 picks, 1 player and a pick for 2 picks, and so on. Really lopsided trades can be vetoed. Rounds 15/16 through 23/24 will be double picks per round.

The time limit is 4 hours. If you miss a time window don't panic, just make up the pick ASAP. You can PM your preferred pick to me beforehand and be assured I won't ever be drafting your top pick for whatever round because my pre-draft prospect list is so darn long I can do without (even if with a grimace).

Suggestion: POST A REASON OR STATISTIC OR DESCRIPTION WITH YOUR PICK to aid discussion and let us know a bit about the pick, as many may not be household names, especially from other eras.

You must PM the next GM after your selection. And please post a notice to that effect on the draft thread to ensure a smooth flow to the draft.

Any player from any league or era are eligible as long as they were not drafted in the ATD 2010. As soon as a pick is posted, the next team's clock will begin even if an ineligible player is chosen: the pick will simply be made up as soon as possible.

Player selection should be based on what they have done (the 'next best' draft, so to speak, the greatest all-time careers not honored by being picked in the main ATD 2010 draft), and not what they will do in the future.

Absolutely no dropping of players: once drafted they are drafted, but players could be traded if team needs change. At the end of the draft a team could pick up an undrafted UFA and simply discard a draft pick.

The number of teams that make the playoffs will depend on the number that qualify for the postseason. To qualify, a team must meet this all-time draft roster condition: Have on the team at least ONE player from each of the following all-time hockey periods:

1916 or earlier
1917-1942
1943-1965
1966-1979
1980-1994
1995-2004
in 2010 (ANY active/nonretired pro player with 300-plus games pro experience regardless of when he began his career)

The very first game ever played in a top pro league defines which time period for the required condition (so, an eighties player whose NHL or SEL rookie season started in 1979 would meet the 1966-79 time period requirement).

On another front, there will be an all-star team of 1LW, 1RW, 1C, 2D, 1G, 1Coach voted on after the regular season.

I really think the pre-1916 should be changed to pre-merger.. pre-1916 is very short and very lean.

I don't mean to be as rude as this sounds, but the fact you think this is is why the rule should be in place. There's definitely enough quality pre-1916 players remaining, including some guys that have never gone, but probably deserve to if we consider all eras to be relatively equal for every team to have two pre-1916 players, so having one shouldn't be a problem.

One could wait until the 23rd round to draft a guy older in hockey history than Wayne Cashman or Dennis Hull (both rookies in 1965), so the era requirement is not at all oppressive for anyone with a modern bias.

If one is stuck for candidates worthy of top-1000 all-time selection in any particular era come the 21st thru 24th rounds then PM me and I'll glad forward a shortlist.

There are certainly enough players prior to 1916 to be "possible" draftees. But it is a much thinner talent pool than any of the other listed time frames, and at least some teams will end up taking guys who aren't the best player available in order to fill the requirement. I think that was jarek's point.

But if that's the price that it takes to force teams to look at players from all eras, then whatever.

What TDMM said is exactly my concern. The best players have already been taken out of that pool, and the ones remaining, with a few notable exceptions that I know of, probably shouldn't be taken in this draft. I will, of course, look further into it, but to say there's enough players from that era for each team to grab two of them, AND to have each of those guys be worthy of this draft is, IMO, hyperbole.

16 teams with 2 players means 36 players. There are precious few players with any sort of retro-trophy nominations left, and in terms of PCHA ASTs, the pool is very scarce right now in terms of guys remaining. The rest, we have to rely on very limited information and statistical placements. Hedberg, when this is all done, I'd be very interested to see your list of at least 32 pre-1916 players that you feel are worthy to be taken here.

The minimum that have to be selected is 16 though.

I know that. That wasn't my point, though. Hedberg claimed there are at least 32 of them. That was my focus.

Sure, I have the list made. Admittedly a lot of their selections is based on limited info, but the evidence suggests while not at the retro trophy level (all though there are still several remaining; there are a few pre-1916 hall of famers hanging around as well), they were among the best of the era. The majority of the 32 players on my list have been selected in MLDs before, so their presence will not water down the league.

I'm really surprised that YOU of all people would say this.

So they have to have won a retro trophy? or have been a PCHA all-star? How many NHL trophy winners are still available, or even runners-up? How many postseason all-stars from the NHL are left? That's simply not the caliber of player that we're looking at anymore. We're taking the "next best" and just like there are "next best" players in modern times, there were back then too.

You are right. There are easily enough players who started before 1916 to meet the requirement. Easily.

I don't, and never have, looked at the era requirement. I will just meet it "naturally" by filling my team up with the best possible players when I select.

The Brooklyn Americans had a really ugly logo. No wonder they folded after 1 season.

My argument would be that the calibre of players of the non-retro trophy/non-PCHA are quite inferior to the non-NHL trophy and All-Star winners available. This is because of the NHL guys, we have more info on them than the "next best" pre-1916 guys. And just because some of the remaining guys have been selected in an MLD before, does not mean they should have been there.

I can't think of any who would fall into that category. In fact, I can think of five players I'm licking my chops at the thought of selecting, and they're all pre-merger.

I have shown in the course of the last two ATDs, that the greatness of any significant north american player can be demonstrated by anyone who is willing to do the legwork, for example, using google news or the globe and mail.

If you feel the way you do, just leave all the good early players to me, and I will take them and then show you what you missed out on.

You never asked me when you signup (and you signup a month ago), so I thought you were not interested anymore. Should of asked you, but I forgot! If a 17th team signup, I would gladly co-GM, but I think it's too late now.

Really looking forward to this. It'll be a good way for me to find out more about hockey history. As someone not as well-versed in pre-1916 hockey as others around here I was wondering if anyone could provide me with a website which provides pre-1916 stats for different players who are available for the MLD.

Wikipedia has good stats organized by season, starting with 1887 (taken from Ultimate Hockey):
