As a player or as a coach?

He basically gives us veteran depth. I think the signing has to do more for what he can do for the team off the ice then on(ie veteran leadership). While I have no solid facts to back this up, I do think the Islanders performed better as a team in games he played.

That seems to be the most logical thing. He is a steadying voice in the lockerroom, someone who can show the younger guys how to approach and prepare as a professional... all the stuff vets are thought to impart to youth. No team functions purely on the basis of youthful potential.

Good news. Doug Weight is a class act.

Hopefully once he does hang them up, the Islanders can keep him within the organization.

His primary function is mentor to John Tavares. JT actually lives in Weight's house like a member of the family. Goes a long way toward helping a teenager like Tavares adjust to the real world. Even if Weight never plays a game, he's very valuable to the team.

As depth signings go, you could do worse. I'd expect he'll be closer to 1.5 than the league minimum, though. He'll play on the 3rd/4th center save for injuries. He's never been fantastic on the draw so he's there as a mentor and he's done a fine job of it with JT thus far.

His deal will be bonus/incentive based, His Cap hit will be very low...

Weight as a fourth maybe third line center at an extremely cheap price? Can't complain about that.

Good to hear Weight will still be with the Islanders next season. He's older but he's a very important part of that team. Let's not forget, he is the captain.

After missing 75 games in the last 2 seasons, I thought that should have retired. I understand that he still loves to play the games but at this stade of his career, he is really injury prone and he might hurt his body even more.

The guy has a cup, over 1000 games, over 1000 points, he has nothing left to prove.

May be so, but Weight's a class act. I think he's sticking around to help this team out. They weren't so bad last year and they're still young. Knowing he can help them out and knowing the future of the team is bright, why not keep going? He loves the game besides.

Weight played very little center last year.

My guess his role on this team next year will be 4th line wing who will get close to half his ice time on the pp.

Wonder what the salary will be. Foote re-signed a few weeks ago and took a 2 mill pay cut for another year. Weight missed most of last year, I don't see him making over 1 mill.

Paying $1.5mil (rough number) to add leadership and guidance to a YOUNG team. Paying $1.5mil to speed up development by 6 months on a team that has PLENTY of room. Its a good signing and would live someone like him in the Avs locker room.

Doug is a class act and he says he is healthy so lets see what he can bring to the table. His leadership will obviously continue to be important.
