You guys can enjoy your unviolent tea parties, i'll remember Georges as being the 1st Habs in a loooong time who kick some ass when he wanted too. The beatings he gave on May and Shelley were epic for me.
Amen Bro

[QUOTE=LyricalLyricist;26310162]No one cares he fought Shelley, peters or whoever.

I cared. I am so sick of watching everytime a Hab drops his gloves he gets pounded. Its time we got some guys in that will stand up for themselves and not take a beating everytime the gloves hit the ice.

So you care that he fought a non-factor? A guy who was probably only dressed because laraque was? They actually wait to see if other enforcer is playing before they play these guys, that's how 'effective' they are against other players.

We we're losing momentum against boston, there was one guy BGL had to fight. Just one. He never did.

If that's your answer, then you just don't get it. A regular season game isn't played the same way, one of the aspects of hockey is intimidation, and players risk penalties to impose them, where as in the playoffs every penalty counts a lot more. You can't keep momentum in a regular season like in the playoffs, and fighting is a way to bring fire to a bench. Goons are going away, fighters are not.

My guess would be that it could mean a lot as we will very likely be up hard against the cap. Right now we are just a hair under 44M for 12 players (plus BGL's 500K) so if the cap is at say 59, that means we about 15M for 10 or 11 players. If say Pleks got 5M and Halak 2.5M (not saying they will or wont) that's half our remaining cap space, and would still need to re-sign Price/BP/Lappy along with 5 or 6 others. Not saying we will be up against the cap for sure, but it looks like it will be tight again unless one of the D is moved.

There's nothing to "get". Fighting is useless save as an entertaining sideshow. I think that fighting vanishes in the playoff is very telling about its real value as evaluated by NHL coaches.

In any case, I'd rather have players that help me win in the playoffs than players who only have usefulness in the regular season.

So I'm still not sure about this. According to NHLSCAP, Laraque no longer had a no-movement clause in effect. Could he not of been sent down the the AHL or ECHL and we would of saved 500k on the cap over the next two seasons (when compared to the buy-out situation)?

Players simply used for fighting at being phased out. It's now time for "hybrid" fighters like Clarkson in NJ, Eager in Chicago, Asham in Philly, etc.

In other words, players who can fight well and also play a regular shift without hurting the team. That's why Laraque is gone, and other will follow suit.

The day of the straightforward "goon" type player is essentially done.

A player who can play and fight will do just fine. A fighter who can't play will not. There's no room on the roster for that kind of guy. The instigator rule has made the goon obsolete. Those still pretending it works are wasting their money and a roster spot

Yea I wouldn't be opposed to have true goons but we also need to be tough across the board.
