We all know they are probably going to be looking at size up front. Maybe a defender with speed and size combined. The cap is going up by 2mill reportedly so they will be able to possibly loke at an option or two.

What are some of your opinions for FA?

We will probably keep on our big club roster:

Pouliot
Plekanec - if price is right, if too high he will likely hit FA
Pyatt
Lapierre
Moore - at right price

We are probably letting go of:

Darche
Bergeron
Mara
Metropolit
S.Kostitsyn

The Habs will likely be looking for upgrades, I know it cost money to upgrade, But basically more size and speed. Any cheap roster players they could pick up.

If you could loot James Neal with an offersheet/trade, he'd be a great fit.

mark my words...Alexandre Giroux

He's a big forward with soft hands who hasn't had a solid chance in the NHL but has lit up the AHL. I can see Mtl offering him a contract and a real chance. At the very least he's be a solid addition on the 3rd line. He's also stioll fairly young (29) and he adds something certain folks in the Quebec media care about and that is francophone content. At the very least he'd make a feel good story to distract the media while the rest prepare for the season.

Not a bad idea by any means. It really can't hurt to give him a shot. He's had 60 goals in the AHL before, and he's a monster in the playoffs. He deserves a chance.

I could see this, too. I could also see the media going ape-*&^% if a team like, oh say, Boston signs him.

If he could play 3rd line in the NHL he'd already be there. He is in the same mold as Corey Locke and Darren Haydar, not gritty enough for a bottom 6 role and have not produced at the NHL level to justify top 6.

The biggest area of need is some "beligerance" and "truculence" to the bottom 6, not fringe skill guys.

Giroux's a purely offensive player that doesn't have the ability to finish at the NHL level. Bad fit for a checking line role.

He's an AHL monster, though.

And remember we don't have so much cap space.

Gomez, Cammalleri, Gionta, Ak46 and Moen are still under contract.

There's a lot of chance that the UFAs - Plekanec and Moore - will be back.

RFAs are Lapierre, Pouliot and Pyatt will resign.

I'm pretty sure Ryan White will be with the team, and maybe Pacioretty.

So, we have 12 forwards for the beginning of the season. The best fit for the Habs, IMO is Colby Armstrong. For the price, he's exactly what we need.

By the time you get some of your RFA's in a new contract, you'll have next to no cap space left. That list includes both of your goalies, who are going to get a nice raise, S. Kostitsyn and Laperierre, who will also be paid quite well. You'll be lucky to be able to fit a 3rd line role player in under the cap without moving a high priced roster player.

He would be a better pick up then Mathieu Darche last summer. Darche was one of the Dogs best players before he was recalled to the Habs, but Giroux would be a step up.

I don't see Sergei Kostitsyn getting a raise since he was all but left off the team during the playoffs.

The Habs have 12 players under contract for next year + BGL's buyout of 500k, so they are just under 44M right now. But they could always end up moving a defensemen to make some room if need be.

Umberger is not UFA. If Gauthier were to consider offering a one-year deal to agings Lehtinen, Demitra or Kariya, I'd say he might be better off with Prospal.

I would say Belanger and Lombardi might get some interest along with Frolov and maybe Taylor Pyatt. Hamhuis and Michalek could be in the talks if Habs get rid of Hamrlik or Spacek. Add Patrick Lalime or Martin Biron if we trade one of Halak/Price.

Trade Sergei Kostitsyn to Vancouver for Bernier and Hordichuk.

Sign Artyukhin.

Keep both goalies for now.

Best case scenario: Jordan Staal
Exactly what we need, but has as much chance as the Leafs winning a cup next year! Colby Armstrong, Alexander Frolov, Patrick Berglund, Patrick Marleau, David Backes, Ryane Clowe and Matthew Lombardi are other great choices. Marleau and Frolov would be expensive and we would need to trade away Spacek and Hammrlik, but they would be ideal because they are big scorers.
