Stupid stupid stupid stupid trade for the Habs. I hope they fail horribly with Price. Halak should have been their man. Price can't stand up to the pressure in Montreal.

One things for sure this afternoon, the Central is now the clear cut tops in goalie talent. Rinne in Nashville, Howard in Detroit, Niemi in Chicago, Steve Mason in Columbus, and now Halak in St. Louis.

I gotta say, there is going to be a LOT of moderately good Goalies on the Free Agent wire and no spaces to put them.

Like Mirtle tweeted, there's going to be a LOT of vet G's out there with no NHL homes.

This is phenomenal for the Preds. They can get a quality vet backup for Rinne for bare minimum.

Mirtle continued with "Which would you rather have? 4.5 million dollar Halak or a Dan Ellis type 1 million dollar deal?"

Is he saying Dan Ellis might not get anything on the open market this year and may re-sign with the Preds to a cheap 1 year so he can wait for a better market?

Any chance we'd take Mason back???

This is a very odd trade unless Montreal knows something.

At first I was scared of this trade and now I like it. The Blues won't have Mason playing like a Vezina winner against us any more and they lose their best forward prospect. St. Louis is going to have a dreadful offense next year. But might sniff the playoffs from winning 1-0 2-1 games.

Yeah but guess what, they have a huge amount of cap space and need NHL forwards. Guess what Chicago has and St. Louis wants? Seriously, the nightmare might be Chicago and St. Louis split the difference and both the Blues and Hawks get better.

As for the idea of a team not trading within their division, when you are in Cap purgatory you will deal with anyone.

no. Mason is still a #1 goalie and should be near the top of the list of UFA's after Nabokov. But he probably wont get as big a $$ as he would like.

But this did make life even harder on Ellis finding a starting spot.

Per Mirtle there is only 3 NHL starting spots open; SJ, TB, and Philly.

And there is also Europe.

And there is the possibility of teams switching starters even though they have a capable one.

That would be a nightmare for us. I just don't see Chicago dealing with St Louis before an Edmonton or someone to the east. All I know is Im glad St Louis doesnt have Chris Mason anymore.

Man, Central should be tougher next year, can't wait. Bit of a shocker, why the hell would Montreal trade Halak?

Yikes. This doesn't affect our games with the Blues as much as it makes them better against everyone else. This is not good news for us.

Now the Hawks have to face:

Halak 6x
Rinne 6x
Howard 6x

There's 18 tough games right off the bat. Congrats to St Louis... I guess

St. Louis is going to make the Playoffs next year... let's just hope they take DETROIT'S spot!

The problem is that you could take that statement and apply it to us, as well. I don't think we're clearly, if at all, better than either StL or C-Bus next season, at least on paper.

I'm not so sure about this. The Blues didn't think Mason was the man and I'm not sure anyone else will....so does that make him a #1 or a #2? Either was, I do think he will make more as a backup than we are willing to pay him to be the backup. Ellis, on the other hand, I could see being re-signed. In an odd way I also think he has a better chance than Mason of being a starter for a team like the Flyers that need cheap(er) help.

Wow, top to bottom the Central now may be THE most stacked goaltending division in the league. Goals will be hard to come by indeed.

Depends on whether or not the youth stay consistent - and that's always an unknown, especially with goaltending.

That said, it does look very impressive on paper.

Too bad Vokoun won't be traded. Since the Flyer's became my second team (yes, the Timonen/Hartnell situation) I would have LOVED to see Vokie in Philly. Not only for that fact but also I would actually get to watch him more on television due to NBC's love affair with the Atlantic Division.

That said, Ellis to Philly wouldn't be bad either. I just don't think they have it with Boucher/Leighton.

Chicago trades Kris Versteeg and the rights to Bill Sweatt traded to Toronto for Viktor Stalberg, Chris DiDomenico, and Philippe Paradis

Stalberg and Versteeg are the key pieces to the deal. Paradis picked way too high by Carolina last year already traded twice before he even plays in the league...
