Eddie Shore on Ace Bailey

A disastrous collision with Bruins legend Eddie Shore resulted in Bailey fracturing his skull. At the Boston Garden, the Bruins hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs. King Clancy was unceremoniously dumped by Red Horner in the Toronto zone. As he was skating back, he mistakenly checked Toronto's Irvine "Ace" Bailey instead of Horner from behind. It was a basic slew-foot - as simple as it was unsportsmanlike. But as Bailey fell he hit his head on the ice and fractured his skull. He lay twisted and twitching in a seizure-like state. Bailey had two brain operations and hovered between life and death for 10 days. Bailey eventually recovered to live a normal life but his hockey career was finished.

The story of the Bailey-Shore incident is brought up on an annual basis. One of hockey's greatest traditions was born out of horrific accident. On February 14, 1934 the NHL held a benefit game for Bailey and his family by creating an all star squad to play against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The game would become the predecessor to the annual mid-season All Star Game.

Oh and Scott Niedermayer's high stick on Peter Worrell was FAR more vicious than what McSorley did.

And what's crazy is that Cormier is developing this type of reputation before his NHL debut. He's proving to be quite a liability.

Todd bertuzzi on...Eric Messier game 3 2001 playoffs in overtime. Rams messiers head right into the ice negating a Canuck PP...Forsberg scores on the 4 on 4. One of the dirtiest plays I have ever seen

Bertuzzi's hit on Moore was disgusting. To sucker punch him is one thing but then to drive his head into the ice very distrubing.

Chelios on Propp as mentioned earlier in the thread. I don't know if it is the worst, but it's up there. i remember watching this when I was younger as it happened and got really nervous when I saw all that blood.

Chris simon on Hollweg is the first thing i thought of when i read this thread title.

As far as the Bertuzzi-Moore situation, wasn't Moore a guy who was getting 'paid back' and at least somewhat 'deserved' to be hit? Not saying he deserved to be injured, but didn't moore sort of start this? In other words, it wasnt a totally 100 percent unprovoked hit.....when i think of a cheap shot i think of situations where the innocent player was just selected at random.

Turgeon Hunter is still the worst for me. Pure hockey evil on that play.

The Domi one was pretty ugly too. I remember watching that and being furious at him...largely because seeing Stevens that furious had me concerned for the lives of some of our other guys.

A "cheap shot" is not allowing the other party to either defend themselves or attack back.

hunter's cheapo on turgeon was horrible in so many ways.
1. turgeon was not even remotely considered a tough guy.
2. hunter skated AT LEAST 3 full seconds before hammering turgeon.he waited for turgeons blind side then nailed it. and he definitely knew that turgeon had scored.
3. turgeon was defenseless.
a cowardly attack .and certainly one of the worst cheap shots (if not the worst) of all time.
but the laugh is on him...because that shot will be what kills any slight chance hunter had at hall of fame inclusion.

a "cheap shot" is usually an unprovoked dirty hit/slash/elbow/punch.

I beg to differ. In your example, Turgeon's provocation was scoring the series winning goal. Hunter's reaction was to take a run at him.

Glenn Anderson's sucker punch on Tomas Sandstrom should lead the way... Adding even more insult to injury was that was ONLY a $500 fine and not a 10+ game suspension... I lost any respect that I had for Anderson as a player after that incident...

Maybe Moore should have fought Bert when he was challenged instead of skating away?

Ok, didn't think so.

In that case, I'm sure Moore would still be playing.
