This will allow them to sign Leighton for cheap. Having 5 terrific dmen will make up for his issues. They simply can't keep playing two 35 year old dmen for half a game.

You're not paying Dan Hamhuis a likely 4M+ to play on the 3rd pairing, nor would he sign that contract knowing that would be his role.

What I like about this is, as it stands the flyers have 3 defensive guys in Timonen, Pronger and Hamuis. Carle was great with Pronger and Coburn has shown flashes with Timonen. And they could bring a guy like Bartulis up to play with Hamhuis and have 3 ace pairings saving on pronger and timonen. Of course this has to fit under the cap and could piss some people off spending so much on the defence, but hell the team went 6 games deep with Leighton and boosh with a solid defence infront this can only make it better if they are stuck with that again.

Guess this means the end of Hot Carle.
Given the rumors of Coburn not wanting to sign for what Holmgren wants to sign him for, I think he might be on his way out. That is unfortunate if it's how it works out, Coburn was great for us this post season. I know a lot of people aren't fans of his but I am.

What would be the return the Flyers could get for an unsigned Coburn as an RFA?

great news. I am guessing upon him signing there will be another move following this.
Might be a sign that Coburn is asking for too much.
He is one of the better defenseman on the market.
I did suggest this a little while back but it was Carle for Hamhuis's rights and a conditional pick

I wonder if they would play the 3 pairings like top 2's, like instead of playing pronger as much and timonen as much cut their minutes and use Hamhuis instead, hes capable

at this point coburn >= hamuis.

i would hate to see hamhuis become the replacement for coburn, because why would we sign dan hamhuis to a bigger contract than coburn has now, instead of just signing coburn to said contract?

Pronger-Carle
Hamhuis/Coburn-Timonen
Hamhuis/Coburn-Bartulis

is a scary good defense corps.
but it's also an expensive one...

Hopefully we trade Carle for a nice return and sign Hamhuis in the range of $4-4.5.

I also dont think the Flyers would make this move if they couldnt sign him, or didnt have a deal in place, sort of like the Timonen/Hartnell trade a few years ago.

I couldn't say. Not that many guys like Coburn get traded as RFA's, at least to my knowledge. Can anyone think of some comparable situations?

I think a first rounder from a play-off team wouldn't be out of the question, but I could be wrong.

A first rounder could be beneficial to replenishing the farm system, although from what I hear the draft significantly tapers off after the first 10 picks this year.

Lilja? Leopold? I don't know what they stand to make, just going off of their previous contracts.

i wouldn't say it tapers off, but the lower rounds definately aren't as good as some past years. atleast they're not projected to be.

but this years 1st round is one of the deepest we've seen in a while, IMO

****ing love this if we sign him around 4 per year.

If we sign him, I predict Carle for a 1st this year or if Coburn is indeed having contract issues, he goes to VCR for Schneider and a pick.
