If the Kings go for Souray, Smyth has to be going the other way and Kovalchuk would have to be signed.

Let's hope so.

I'm probably in the minority, but I would prefer Souray and his contract over Smyth's.

If healthy, I would agree.

Here's what the Kings should do

Trade for Kovalchuk's rights and sign him ASAP. Then, have him introduced at the Draft and make the anouncement of the Kings 1st round pick.

What do you say Dean?

Kovalchuk wants to wait until July 1st to see his options.

If NJ ends up with Kovalchuk, they will be screwed on the back-end.

NJ will not re-sign Kovalchuk with Martin UFA this year and Parise due for a raise next season. They could use some more help on the blueline as well...

NJ has also traded a fair amount of their higher-end prospect pool in the Kovalchuk and now Arnott trades.

I'm sure they would be willing to trade Kovalchuk's rights. Even if DL can't sign him before July 1st, he gets time to wine and dine him and get a jump start on the negotiations. If DL is serious about signing him, LA definitely has the picks/prospects to take the chance on trading for his rights.

Something tells me that Kovy wants to hear what other teams are offering before he decides. I don't see him signing with anyone prior to July 1st. However, if we don't have to give up too much to own his rights, I guess I'm ok with it.

Not sure how reliable this is, but it answers our question about Kovalchuk and NJ.

Obviously if TFP isn't something to rely on, the fact that they are paper-thin on D is.

Just pure speculation, but could Nashville be gearing up for a big UFA push? They've moved a lot of cap space today. Marleau or Kovalchuk could really help their offense.

Could be another team in play now on July 1st.

Possibly. but it's more likely a case of them wanting get something for Hamhuis, and after the significant drop off in goals for Arnott that he may not be worth $4.5M.

I would agree with you but the only problem is Souray's injury past.

Just took a look at capgeek and Souray is on the books for 2 more years at 5.4 million. If the Kings were to deal for Souray and send Smyth back to EDM they'd be saving almost 1 million and add a monster of a shot from the point.

Giving up on Hamhuis and trading your captain isn't going to do much to attract FA's who want to win.

Trotz is a God though.

Not if you offer the captancy to the UFA. Could be a factor.
