Contract for Hamhuis

I made that thread to get some opinions on how much Hamhuis should make, and that with some reasoning.

1. Dan Hamhuis

Height: 6-1
Weight: 209lbs
Age: 27 (13/12/1982)
Pro Experience: 8 Years: 6 NHL Seasons (483 Games, 28 PO Games), 2 AHL Seasons (144 Games)

2. Scouting Report

Quote:
Assets: Can play a sound defensive game, log big minutes and also be used in a shutdown role. Moves the puck well out of the defensive zone. Has loads of hockey sense.

Flaws: Isn't a physical defenseman, which somewhat limits his effectiveness against big NHL forwards. Is also a limited contributor in the offensive zone.
3. Play through his last Contract

4. Comparable Defensemen - (between 26 and 30 years old; five or more seasons played; two-way defender; 70+ games; around 25 points; 22 to 24 minutes; penalty killer)
  • Keith Ballard ($4.2MM, signed 2009)
  • Robyn Regehr ($4.0MM, signed 2008)
  • Brad Stuart ($3.75MM, signed 2008)
  • Barrett Jackman ($3.625MM, signed 2008)
  • Chris Phillips ($3.5MM, signed 2007)

I think Regehr and Stuart are the most comparable players, around $3.75MM sound about right for Hamhuis. Any other players you can think off, that compare to Hamhuis?

I'm hoping like hell it's 3.75, but realistically I think it will be in the 4.0-4.5 range for a couple reasons.

1) Cap is going up.
2) Flyers went out and acquired his rights, so we avoid a bidding war, but at the same time, Hamhuis certainly won't be taking any discounts and he could probably get above 4 in open bidding considering how weak the UFA D market is this year.

i'm hoping for a 6 year deal @ 4 per (obviously wouldn't be sad if it's less lol, but i don't think the number will start w/ a '3')

I think the only way you can get it under 4 million a season is to throw 6-8 years at him, which is what I think Holmgren will do.

I wouldn't mind giving him a 6 year deal for a few reasons. The cap savings would be nice, obviously. The guy doesn't miss games (he's played at least 78 games every year in the league right?). He's 27, that's 6 peak years.

We'll see, I guess. Homer has put himself in a situation that is very easy to **** up. I don't have confidence in him not to not, at least in some minor way, **** it up.

Judging from the comparable defenseman I'd say he'd be between 4.0-4.2 depending on length.

Maybe a 7 year deal. He know he will be on a competitive team, and when the deal is up he is under 35 and will probably be able to get a big pay day. Maybe around a 3.75 million cap hit.

The other train of thought might be a short term deal. Maybe he doesn't want to have to wait 7 years for a big deal. Maybe he's willing to take a pay cut, but only for a little while. I could see a 3 year 10.5 million deal be in place.

I'd say 5 years at 20 million, sounds reasonable and not too long of a contract.

It's homer, so its either going to be 3 years 20 million, or he is going to get an absolute steal. There never seems to be anything in the middle with him.

Good Examples - Pronger, Bartulis
Bad Examples - Lupul, Jones

Right there.

Homer has been vocal on his mancrush for him, I think its completely feasible for him to lock him down long-term.

im excited to see the latest d-man in the bundy/jones tradition added to the fold. im expecting him to get 4 mil. which i seriously dislike and will hate for years to come. if he he gets 4+ i will hate it immediately.

im a ham-house hater.

Did you just compare Hamhuis to Randy Jones?

Hamhouse is the worst attempt I've ever heard at making fun of a player.

He's going to be our #3 D, I've seen enough of him over the years. I would generally try to argue my point at this impasse, but I know the negative stance you generally take.
