Shutout Sunday 20/03/2005

Anyone notice that 6 of the 8 completed games have ended with one team not scoring?
Philadelphia has a chance to make it 7 out of 9 as they lead Portland 4 - 0 in the 3rd. I guess teams are starting to clamp down for the playoffs.
Philadelphia does in fact make it 7 out of 9 ending in a shutout.

Exactly why I was logging in. It seems to me the shutout ratio is up. Is it the goaltending, the lack of quality scorers or the way the game is played today?

Is it safe to say that all these drastic changes did nothing for leaguewide scoring?

I think the official statistics show that scoring is up like two tenths of a goal per game. So basically the rule changes have done nothing.

Got to hand it to them. This is the only sport that can change so much and have it amount to nothing. I still haven't figured out what's wrong with ties, highlight reel saves, and scoring similar to soccer.

Quoth the Futurama: "It's good, but will it get them off their tractors?"

Sadly enough, nothing below double digits will.

Why is this all about goals?

A great save is just as exciting as a goal. It's the SCORING OPPORTUNITY that fans want to see more, not goals, and not saves. The result is secondary.

I think the offense needs to pick up for sure. I remember watching many games where, even with exciting scoring chances, I wasn't into the play because I just figured no goal would be scored. When you aren't excited about a rush because you figure it will just be defended/saved all the time, it takes the fun out of things.

Reduce that goalie equipment!!!

Atleast here, fans still hold their breath and move to the edge of their seats when an odd-man rush occurs. I think you're usually guaranteed an exciting result, be it a goal, or a spectacular save.
