I'm pretty sure the Thrashers are part of that package as well, including the naming rights tied into Philips Arena

Awful news. According to the article, the Thrashers are being sold separately from the Hawks and arena. The Hawks are tied to the arena, but the Thrashers are free to move.

i'd much prefer an independent Thrashers owner...sick of them all being tied together, what other cities do that?

if the Phoenix situation has proven anything...its that Bettman will fight for large markets, until he's blue in the face...they wont be moving anywhere rather easily...

both are tied to the arena by way of the naming rights... plus atlanta spirit isnt allowed to talk to people about moving the team for a couple more years at least

Possibly, but the anchor keeping the team here, that the Thrashers are tied to the arena's naming rights, is to be severed.

The owners have just released a statement that they are only looking for investors, not lookig to sell the teams or Philips.

from Blueland Blog:

Quote:
Bruce Levenson and Michael Gearon, two of the principal partners of Atlanta Spirit LLC, the parent company that owns the Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta Thrashers and Philips Arena operating rights, have released the following statement regarding the rumored sale of the teams and arena:

“As has been shared publicly for more than a year, we are interested in finding minority investors and have engaged a firm to assist us in that effort. We have no plans to move either team, and remain committed to the Hawks, the Thrashers, Philips Arena and the city of Atlanta.”

What do you expect them to say? Hey, we are selling. The team will be gone after next season so be sure to get those season tickets this year. Go Thrashers.

There's cynicism, and there's downright lunacy. This? This isn't cynicism.

You sound like one of those Winnipeg Jets nutters. Everything is a conspiracy within a conspiracy.

Right.....Everything that has every been said by ASG or someone in the organization has always been correct right. Always straight up with the fans.

No conspiracy. I do not believe in any conspiracy theories with anything. I am not saying what is true or not. Just that I expected nothing but the response we got from the ASG. I hope it is just investors, but would not be surprised if it was not. If they are looking to sell, I hope it is someone local.

Several years ago Atlanta Spirit would not have even bothered responding to rumors, at least it seems they are become more sensitive to the effects these rumors have on their business.

Or, in the past they were the owners that told us to "deal with it". Now they're so desperate that they have to engage in the damage control.
