I'd only accept the Pens if they gave us something substantial, and Tangradi can probably jump into our lineup immediately.
If there's one thing the Penguins need it is skilled wingers. I can't see it happening.

Yeah. They also need defensemen, badly. That team is going to be weak until they get a legitimate number 1 defenseman. With the loss of Gonchar, suddenly the Penguins don't scare me anymore. I mean, if you thought their powerplay sucked before...

That said, we should not look to salvage them by giving them Coburn for anything less than severe overpayment. If Coburn turns into the top pairing defenseman I think he's going to be within three years, him in Pittsburgh is the LAST thing I want. Screw the return. Do not move him to the Penguins.

Giroux publicly undressing him on the rush on a regular basis would be kind of entertaining.

Not as fun as it will be watching their pitiful excuse for a defense get run over next season.

They won't need Coburn to get deked out of his jock, they have plenty of other defensemen for that.

They'll be fine.

That's a GM who has a very good idea of what he's about, and has two of the best forwards in the league to build around plus a very good 3rd line center.

EDIT: I also have very little fear of Braydon Coburn, but that's another matter.

I have to agree. His patented "ole" move would bring a smile to my face, if he's in a Pens jersey.

Their defense right now is:

Goligoski (#3-4) - Orpik (#3-4)
Letang (#3-4 *RFA) - xxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxx - xxxxxxxxxx

UFAs: Gonchar - Eaton - Leopold - McKee

That's not a defense, that's an atrocity. No offense to the Penguin's GM, "who has a very good idea of what he's about."

If they don't get a legitimate #1, they're going to have issues.

Letang has a contract, he isnt an RFA anymore.

and Letang-Orpik was their top pairing most of the year, I dont see a problem with it. They are both number 2s really, not "3 or 4". Orpik is a great shutdown physical D man, and Letang is a good 2 way guy.

I hate pittsgurgh too, but that doesnt mean I ignore their players abilities

So, they need to make some signings... they'll be OK. They've owned our ass with or without Gonchar the last couple of years, so I'm not sure I'd be getting too cocky. They're not as dangerous as they were, but that's the way it's going to go. They need some of those young guys to develop, and they need to make some signings.

I mean, hell, our GM appears to be flirting with going bottom barrel in goal again. That would concern me a bit more.

If they keep Leopold they have a respectable top 4 D

I wasn't aware Letang got a contract. I must have looked at an old chart. I used HockeyBuzz for a change because CapGeek is down at the moment.

And yes, Letang and Orpik are the best two defensemen now, but I don't consider them "two's". I consider Letang better than Carle and Orpik (for now) better than Coburn. However, I don't think either is better than Hamhuis, and I consider Hamhuis a decent 2/strong 3. So, I don't think they're necessarily 2s.
