Finding a taker for Roman Hamrlik, without taking much in salary back?
Do you guys think this would be possible? Getting rid of his $5.5 million salary for next season would go a LONG way this summer.
I know he's a solid, veteran defenseman. But still, if we could get a 2nd or 3rd round pick or a prospect for him, I'd personally do it in a second.
Markov-Subban
Spacek-O'Byrne
Gill-Gorges
I'd be alright with that. And there's always a chance we could find a somewhat cheep replacement for Hamrlik on the UFA market. Z. Michalek would be a great addition, but I imagine he will get 4+ on the market.
So, I know some fans probably don't like this idea. But at this point, personally, I'd ship him out for whatever I could get..as long as we're not getting much in salary back.
No thanks (unless we can sign Michalek or Volchy).
What if Markov takes a set back and is out until December instead of November?
Hamrlik always steps up in a big, big way when Markov is out. I'd prefer to move Spacek if we had to move anyone (and I was one of the guys sticking up for Spacek).
I have no problem with hanging onto Hamrlik for another year. It's the last year of his contract and I think he was gassed last year because he had to play too many minutes in Markov's absence.
I wouldn't mind using his cap room on someone else this year, but I am not going to be pissed if he plays out his contract with the Canadiens.
I've heard some talk about buying Hammer out for 2.7M, and NHL rules saying that Montreal would then have a cap hit of .9M each year for the next three years. Is that a valid option?

While I agree with you. We can put OByrne in. Pk is most certainly in with MAB goneé But Ob would be great.
Getting rid of Hamrlik, would help get a good offensive player to help us score more.
if you want to get rid of Hamrlik,
there is 2 options
the "Samsonov" trade or the "Malakhov" trade
Samsonov for 2 players to buy-out
A team that need a defense but not ready to take a 5.5 cap hit so they trade some players that they want to buy out but the habs take the contract.
Malakhov + 1st round for Jim Fahey and Alexander Korolyuk.
you give a player + 1st round and the teams takes away cap from you.
Why move him? Unless we are looking for a big upgrade on a young puck moving defensemen, there is no reason to downgrade our defense. Our depth on defense was one of the biggest reasons we made it so far.
Why mess with something that is so strong?
Markov-Spacek
Hamrlik-Subban
Gorges-Gill
That is one of the best d corps in the conference.
What about buying him out.
Salary $ 5.5. M
Buyout at 65 % = Approx $ 3.6 M
Spread over two years = $ 1.8 M cap hit for this season and next.
Would you do it?
I personally don't think we would miss him much, especially with the emergence of Josh Georges, and the money could be used to beef up our offense. I would do it.

The Habs need at least one more quality top-six forward, Pouliot can't cut it. He's fine as a third-liner though and the Habs do seem to have the masonry for a solid bottom six (if you want to know how good a GM Gauthier is, watching what he does for the 3-4th lines should give us a good idea.)
trade him for condtional pick or waive him and send to minors either way id much rather have a guy like volchonkov or hamius making the 5.5 or even kubina for 3-4 we can find cheaper better replacements in this years free agent defencmen group

Then you trade Andrei for assets and flip those for a upgrade. I mean if you are making a serious upgrade on defense or forward, then yes, Hamrlik is expendable, but if you aren't there really is no point in moving him right now. Hamrlik is still valuable to this team, and worst case scenario, he is a good commodity to have at the deadline.
Do you all forget how Hamrlik carried our team for the first half of the season, until Halak turned it on and carried the second half.
we might as well have had 2 players this year.
Roman and Jaroslav.
If he is that good, why everybody want to get rid of him ? And we all know that he will be very hard to trade. SO, I suppose he is not that good and overpay !
How are you going to do that? I think I have made it clear that if you are upgrading sure. But bottom line is, top 4 defensemen, particularly young ones, do not fall out of the sky; they are typically the most coveted players in the league.

to manage your salary cap effectively you want to reap full value out of it.... and Hamrlik at 5.5 is not full value. Pretty elementary I say.
If we trade him to a team that would take him, without taking on a stupid contract, than we can use 5.5 in a combination of ways either up front or on the back end.

Cap space does nothing to improve your team though. At the end of the day, you still have to find teams that are willing to give you upgrades, which contrary to popular opinion, is very hard to do.
