CHL-IHL Evansville "IN" 2010-11

Ron Geary buys Muskegon Lumberjacks and moves club to Evansville. Will play in Swonder Ice Arena with added temporary bleachers for a year before moving into new Evansville arena downtown...
rThe new CHL will now have eighteen clubs for the 2010-11 season...

With the Lumberjacks entering the USHL wasn't this move gonna happen?

hahaha certainly going to be the smallest "AA" team playing in a 1000-seat arena. It shows the 4 team IHL is really desperate for teams to bring in the AAHL team before the real arena is built yet.

It doesn't appear the leagues or the IceMen know what's going on with the CHL-IHL agreement/merger. The CHL reports the team is joining the Central Hockey League, while the IceMen and IHL report the team is joining the IHL.

Doesn't seem to be all that much confusion.

Yes, Geary could have waited a year, and probably should have financially. However, he saw the opportunity to buy a winning team with a sound hockey operation NOW. Thus he won't have to start from scratch next year with an expansion franchise. The club won't turn a profit next year playing in the small rink, but a new arena is the payoff for the next year...

A month ago I am sure he was willing to wait... But the situation has changed in the past month... I am sure the small rink will be able to handle some rented temporary bleacher seats to bring the house up to the point of possibly breaking even, or close to breaking even...

And not that many expansion franchises turn a profit during the first year anyway... Its always cost money to set up shop and market a club the first year...

Here's some local flavor:

I believe Swonder will upgrade the seating to about 1500 for next year, and the new arena should be done by 2011-12. Just drove by yesterday and the arena looks to be on or ahead of schedule.

This is really big news for Evansville. Surprisingly, the support for the Icemen has been very good for a community of this size in this area of the country, even before they won the championship this year. We've already got some things in place to help boost interest in the local youth hockey association, so it will hopefully help get more kids playing!

And what a nice arena Evansville is building... I believe the Evansville fans will give the club a break about the venue during this coming year with such a nice arena under construction...

Yes, the payroll will be considerably higher, but divide the CHL's less than $11,000 per week payroll by 19 players, the minor league players aren't getting rich... The CHL allows 19 on the roster, but only 18 can dress for a game...

Yeah, buddy... that's a beautiful facility they've got going up.

If Evansville can do that for a CHL franchise, why can't Peoria do it for the AHL? The building the Rivermen are in now is woefully inadequate in terms of their "press box" (two rows of seats at tables), their concessions (too few stands, not enough selection), and the fact that they have no revenue-generating luxury boxes.

Peoria could sacrifice up to 2000 of their 9000 seats at Carver Arena to build a first-class press box and luxury boxes, similarly to what was done in Rockford at the MetroCentre, and still have more than enough seats to make money at the AHL level if they could fill them every night. If Bradley basketball needs more than 7000 seats, let 'em build their own on-campus facility.

Well they're not really doing it for a CHL/IHL franchise, actually I don't think there's even been any negotiations yet for the IceMen to play there, just kinda a plan by the IceMen. And probably will happen since Evansville has a team that needs an arena and a new arena. (kinda a 1+1=2 thing). But the main reason is NCAA DI basketball for The University of Evansville.

Or Peoria could put in some terrace suites alike the Oklahoma City's Cox Center... Remove a few rows of seats, around 500 or so, and put in some suites atop the lower bowl... But alike Evansville, the Carter arena was built to house the college basketball team as well...
