I might be wrong, but I don't think you nead to protect unsigned players ... definitely UFA's & I think this also includes RFA's. Once they sign though, they'll need to expose someone on their active roster for the required waiver period in order to activate the player......
Didn't the arbitrator rule that the Bruins had to pay 'X' amount of dollars as Berards contract, otherwise he is an unrestricted free agent.
Berard is unrestricted, meaning no one holds his rights, meaning he does not have to be protected by Boston, since they lay about as much claim to him as Columbus does right now.

Its the same as Kristich(sp) a few years ago. They chose to walk away from the arbitrators decision making Berard unrestricted and free to sign with any team. The only right Boston has is the right to match any offer below $2.008 million. They don't have to protect him because they walked away and don't owe his rights anymore.
