Red Wings Cap Tracker: 2010-11 & 2011-12

welcome to your 2010-2011-2012 cap-tracking, free agent-speculating, roster-retooling, line-juggling, management-questioning extravaganza!

OVERVIEW: final roster complete. although we're technically over the cap, $850,000 of the allotted cap space is bonuses from Modano & Salei that count this year [until their conditions are unattainable] but can be applied to next year's cap if we crest the $59.4 million mark this season.

[handy roster building/cap calculating/trade machining tools at capgeek; also has a daily cap tracker.]

My guess is Helm, Eaves and Abdelkader are signed.

Either Homer or Bertuzzi or another cheap top 6 (Afinogenov) are signed.

1 of Maltby, Miller or another 13th forward are signed.

Lebda and Meech go and either Lilja or another 7th defenseman are signed.

Unless we are not re-signing Helm, Eaves, Abdelkader or Miller, we cannot afford any of those if we want 13 forwards and 7 defenseman.

Svatos, Arty, ad Taguay might be the only ones we could get cheap enough, but if something were to come up like an incredible trade offer the Wings couldn't refuse and we were left with some cap space, we gotta always be prepared .

Svatos might be interesting as a depth guy, because he'd come cheap.

The rest either will want too much money, or aren't worth it. Pleks, Frolov, Tanguay will want too much $$$. As for the defenseman, they all will want more than the Wings can afford.

I was thinkin if cap does go up by 2 mill. Let go of Miller and we can still keep Bert and get a good F via FA.

AUTO-GENERATED CAPGEEK.COM LINES
FORWARDS
Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Johan Franzen ($3.955m)
Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Jiri Hudler ($2.875m) / Daniel Cleary ($2.800m)
Tomas Holmstrom ($1.875m) / Kris Draper ($1.583m) / * Todd Bertuzzi ($1.500m)
* Darren Helm ($0.900m) / * Patrick Eaves ($0.900m) / * Justin Abdelkader ($0.850m)
Mattias Ritola ($0.517m)
DEFENSEMEN
Nicklas Lidstrom ($6.200m) / Brian Rafalski ($6.000m)
Brad Stuart ($3.750m) / Niklas Kronwall ($3.000m)
Jonathan Ericsson ($0.900m) / Jakub Kindl ($0.883m)
GOALTENDERS
Chris Osgood ($1.417m) / Jimmy Howard ($0.717m)
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS
(these totals are compiled using the bonus cushion)
ROSTER: 21; CAP: $58.8m; PAYROLL: $56.405m; CAP ROOM: $2.395m BONUSES: $0.000m

with that roster we have like 2.4 in cap space with that we can get some1 like Afinogenov n just re-sign Meech as 7th D.
or we can re-sign Lilja/Lilja-esque UFA + a depth forward.

Thoughts?....

Tanguay made 2.5 last year and then he went off to have one of his worst seasons, I can't see him making that much money.

But would the Wings be interested in Byfuglien? The guy is the Lucic/Simmonds/Downie/Clakston type of player that many of us have been asking for. I just doubt CHI would trade him to us.

Under the assumption that the cap does increase by $2m here are some of the options the Wings can pursue.

They'll resign Bert for a similar deal he is coming off of. Somewhere around $1.5m. Helm, Abby, Miller and Eaves will all be retained. I believe Helm and Abby at .875, Miller at .6-.7 and Eaves probably at the higher end around .9-1m.

Out of Lilja, Lebda and Meech I think we'll see Lilja and Meech stay. If they do not stay, the Wings will add a Lilja-esque player to the roster through FA.

This gives the Wings a roster looking something like this....

2010-11 DETROIT RED WINGS
CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR
FORWARDS
* Todd Bertuzzi ($1.500m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Johan Franzen ($3.955m)
Daniel Cleary ($2.800m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Jiri Hudler ($2.875m)
* Patrick Eaves ($0.900m) / Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Tomas Holmstrom ($1.875m)
Kris Draper ($1.583m) / * Darren Helm ($0.875m) / * Justin Abdelkader ($0.875m)
* Drew Miller ($0.600m) / Mattias Ritola ($0.517m)
DEFENSEMEN
Nicklas Lidstrom ($6.200m) / Brian Rafalski ($6.000m)
Brad Stuart ($3.750m) / Niklas Kronwall ($3.000m)
* Andreas Lilja ($1.000m) / Jonathan Ericsson ($0.900m)
Jakub Kindl ($0.883m) / * Derek Meech ($0.600m)
GOALTENDERS
Chris Osgood ($1.417m) / Jimmy Howard ($0.717m)

(these totals are compiled using the bonus cushion)
ROSTER: 24; CAP:$58.8m; PAYROLL: $58.605m; CAP ROOM: $0.195m BONUSES: $0.000m

The decisions that must be made are on defense. Should Lilja and Meech be canned, allowing the Wings about $1.6m in space?

There is a surplus at F... Will Maltby return? If an RFA isn't retained, who? Eaves, Miller, Helm or Abby?

If the Wings let Miller, Lilja and Meech go, they'll have about $2.3 in cap space...

2010-11 DETROIT RED WINGS
CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

* Todd Bertuzzi ($1.500m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Johan Franzen ($3.955m)
Jiri Hudler ($2.875m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Daniel Cleary ($2.800m)
Tomas Holmstrom ($1.875m) / Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / * Patrick Eaves ($0.900m)

ROSTER: 21; CAP:$58.8m; PAYROLL: $56.405m; CAP ROOM: $2.395m BONUSES: $0.000m

And, if Bert isn't retained, almost $4m... about $3.895. If Bert leaves, the Wings would need a Forward, and a 7th defenseman.

In my opinion, let Lilja walk, let Meech walk and let Bert walk and enter the FA market with around $4m. See what's available. If other options are too expensive, maybe Bert can come in after FA starts. I think there may be better options than Bertuzzi that might be worth pursuing.

Thoughts?

updated w/ Bert's signing, and [thankfully] removed J-Will from the Wings' FA list.

as it stands: just over $2.6mil (edit: until the new cap number comes out) to spend on Gator, Helm, Miller, Eaves, and Meech, assuming it's only going to our RFAs. this is going to be interesting...

Apparently the cap limit will go up by $2 million IIRC, so that would give us around $4.6 million to sign our RFA's and possibly get another player through free agency. I'm afraid we won't be having a very exciting summer in Detroit.

We won't have a very exciting summer next year either. We will stress about signing Lidstrom again, and we will see what Howard warrants. Hopefully some of our RFAs only sign a one year deal this year so we have some space for one one or two of our GR kids, should they warrant a shot after this year.... which they absolutely will.

WIth the cap apparently set at 59.4 million now, that leaves us with 5.2 million in cap space left to sign our RFAs and any potential ufas.

At this point I'd try and get helm, eaves, and abdelkader on 2 or 3 year deals worth 850,000 a year. While they've shown promise, I don't think they are worth 1,000,000 just yet. Even though I hate meech, if he signs for league minimum I'd keep him and have around 2.2 million left to get a forward, while letting miller walk. In retrospect I kind of wish we didn't sign bertuzzi, I think we could have given talon just as good a package as boston and brought in Horton.

No Lilja?

I have no idea how much money we for use but if we have 2+ million free, how much do you think Peter Mueller is asking for. I'd totally piss my pants if we got him. I know he's a bit inconsistent but he was really impressive in Colorado. Day-dreaming I guess...

Current Cap/Roster Situation

I think everybody already knows this, but I just wanted to recap the current cap/roster situation assuming that Ken Holland signs Modano, Abdelkader, and Helm.

FORWARDS
Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Tomas Holmstrom ($1.875m)
Johan Franzen ($3.954m) / Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Todd Bertuzzi ($1.937m)
Jiri Hudler ($2.875m) / Mike Modano ($1.200m) / Daniel Cleary ($2.800m)
Justin Abdelkader ($1.000m) / Darren Helm ($0.750m) / Patrick Eaves ($0.750m)
Drew Miller ($0.650m) / Kris Draper ($1.583m) / Mattias Ritola ($0.516m)

DEFENSEMEN
Nicklas Lidstrom ($6.200m) / Brian Rafalski ($6.000m)
Brad Stuart ($3.750m) / Niklas Kronwall ($3.000m)
Jonathan Ericsson ($0.900m) / Jakub Kindl ($0.883m)
Derek Meech ($0.500m)

GOALTENDERS
Chris Osgood ($1.416m) /Jimmy Howard ($0.716m)

CARRY-OVER BONUS PENALTY: $50,000

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (compiled using the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $59,400,000
CAP PAYROLL: $59,092,045
BONUSES: $0
CAP SPACE (24-man roster): $307,955

Notes
Abdelkader currently makes $850,000. Helm currently makes $599,444. I penciled in the $1 million and $750,000 figures just as a rough estimate, as well as Modano's $1.2 million figure.

As you can see, this puts us one man over the 23-roster limit, but there seems to be enough cap space to keep them all. Of course, if Holland wants an 8th defenseman, that changes things a bit.

CARRY-OVER BONUS PENALTY: $50,000

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (compiled using the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $59,400,000
CAP PAYROLL: $59,092,045
BONUSES: $0
CAP SPACE (24-man roster): $307,955

Notes
Abdelkader currently makes $850,000. Helm currently makes $599,444. I penciled in the $1 million and $750,000 figures just as a rough estimate, as well as Modano's $1.2 million figure.

As you can see, this puts us one man over the 23-roster limit, but there seems to be enough cap space to keep them all. Of course, if Holland wants an 8th defenseman, that changes things a bit.
With many on this roster gaining another year of experience from last year this line up is right up there with the top 5 teams going into the season. But the DRW can NOT have an injury filled year like last year.

I think its pretty clear what they hope to do. Sign Modano to be the 3rd line center and play on the 2nd PP unit for $1.25 million. Lock up Helm and Abs for long term deals (3 years?) around or a little under a $1 million cap hit. Then, trade Meech for picks, try to send Ritola down to GR and sign a UFA defenseman (Lilja?) for the $1 million that those moves cleared up. I also could see them re-signing Maltby to a 2-way contract and storing him in GR until the playoffs.

That gives us 14 forwards in Detroit and another 2 players in GR (Maltby, Ritola) who they can count on to fill in. And, it gives us 7 defenseman in Detroit and another vet in GR (Janik) who they can count on to fill in when injuries hit. That would give us 4 capable backup forwards and 2 capable backup defeseman if/when injuries hit and it keeps our better prospects playing big minutes in GR. We will also have money left over for call ups.

I think Ritola is out of options. Which means he has to clear waivers.
