c/s... I can't believe people are complaining. But they'd complain if Pleks walked...some fans can never be satisfied.

I was hoping that he wouldnt make more than kesler, but oh well...

Pleks logged a lot of ice time and was a big reason why the habs were hanging around with all the injuries they suffered. He's the only top 6 guy that played all 82 games (and the olympics/playoffs). I think he burned out mid way through the first round due to the accumulation of tough minutes throughout the season. On the bright side, this club has the wildcard in eller who can potentially add more depth to the centre position and take a little of the load away from pleks so that he can be fresher for the post season.

Money? can't compare it to contracts signed 2-4 yrs ago
at worst the pleks contract is 0.5 million too high today
at the end of it's run, it will be a bargain

at 27 he's still young so length is ok

NMC's are made to be broken, how many guys have been asked to waive?

Considering Marleau is getting pretty much 7 mill, this is a steal.

and drives positive results -- eg. Pleks is a guy who outscores first lines.

That's about THE most valuable skill in hockey...
If you say so. I think he's pretty armless against any lines.

They're not even close.
He may be a little better but it's similar style. Smallish defensive minded talent with skills. But not great offensive skills.

Most of them overpaid.

I actually like Plekanec a lot. But we're stuck with four big contracts up front and none of them are top end forwards. No top guys. So we're stuck at being average for years.

You're saying that cammy isn't a top line player? Even gionta was on face for 35 goals this year but injuries ****ed him over. I understand your argument is getting pulled a part by many at this point, but stay within the limits of reality.

That means that when the other team has Sidney Crosby or Alex Ovechkin or Stamkos/Saint-Louis or (insert first-line), usually Plekanec goes onto the ice for the Habs. Tough minutes, top opposition. Gomez can do this as well, but he's not given quite the same amount of harsh assignments (WRT where he starts his shifts).

This is very important stuff. You can't really evaluate a player correctly if you don't know about what matchups he gets...

*sigh* The reason this is important is not because he's expected to win them, it's that he starts most of his shifts in the defensive zone, which is harder than starting them in the offensive zone. IOW, he's being given tough defensive missons.

You would be wrong then. He faced the toughest competition of any Hab forward and came out of it +5.

You do not see many 70+ point players making less than 4 million. It does not happen. If that is the case, they are usually on an entry-level contract and will get their money later on. Moreover, Plekanec also brings something that many players do not and that is a keen understanding of the defensive side of the game. He is good in his own zone and plays huge minutes on the PK. That alone will bring him from a 4 million player to 5. Please, do not be blinded by stats all the time.

you're right on that (although if cammalleri can bring his playoff level game to the next 5 years of his deal, he's a top end forward), but that's a result of bad decisions made last year...

letting pleks walk this summer would have been another bad move, and although we are in a difficult position cap/roster-wise, you don't fix the problem by making more mistakes.

Pleks @ 5M$ was a good signing for us. We'd have had him for cheaper and longer had Gainey (and presumably Gauthier) not messed up their internal evaluation of him last year, and signed him to a longer deal as an RFA...

but given the situation, we came out as best we could with that deal. Now here's hoping Gauthier does a far better job of building the roster without wasting assets the way Gainey did.

Two out of three seasons he gets around 70 points. How many points should a first line centre get?

I think both are fair deals , with the premise that every UFA is overpaid, I wouldn't mind having those contracts on my team.
I guess that's the best part about having Gomez on your team is that all the other contracts look like a bargain.

Not sure, their numbers are very similar, koivu is only 1 year younger and his career high in point totals is 1 above pleks (71 vs 70). Pleks also seems to be more durable and slightly more consistent in scoring goals. This is with a very simplistic look at the stats, and koivu probably brings much more leadership than pleks. Not sure i'd pay 1.75 million/year for leadership, though.
