Wild/Sabres

I've seen some rumors that Brent Burns could be available and that the Wild are looking for a top 6 forward..............a couple different proposals:

1) D Burns, LW Miettinen for C Connolly, RW Stafford, cond 2011 (basically cap neutral)

2) D Burns, LW Miettinen for C/F Roy, 3rd 2010 (Sabres add about $1.8 million)

Thoughts?

Teams just aren't good trading partners. Both need to improve their center situation. Burns would be nice, but it sounds like it would take Roy to pry him out of Minnesota. With Connolly (hopefully) gone by next summer, at the latest, our center situation would be in a bad place a year from now if we made that deal.

At this point, with Marleau and Plekanec off the board--not that either was an option for Buffalo, anyways--I'm resigned to keeping Connolly and hopefully adding Cullen or Koivu.

Hope that "Finnish for no playoffs", err Jokinen isn't brought in to replace one of the Roy or Connolly....

Yep.....I posted this just before the Marleau deal was reported. HOWEVER, we have one of the softest teams in the league and Connolly, Stafford, and Roy are a major part of that problem.

I would dump Connolly for whatever we can get and then go hard for Cullen

Do yourself a favor and don't propose this on the Wild board. I went over there the other day and they have a thread of bad trade proposals and anyone including Burns is considered bad by them.

There's a thread on the trade board speculating that their 1st rounder (9th overall) is available for a young top six forward.

With Miller hitting his prime, I wonder if we could give them Stafford (+?), then include that pick in another deal for an upgrade elsewhere (ie center, PPQB, etc.)

Stafford, prospect, #23 for #9

I don't see Regier moving Stafford in a deal like that at this point.

Unless he somehow had a deal for a replacement winger already agreed to beforehand.

If Vanek goes to the right side that would make the top 3 RWs Vanek, Pommer and Grier. With Hecht, Ennis and Kennedy on the left side.

I don't see why they would need to trade for a replacement wing if they move Stafford.

I honestly think the plan is to move Ennis to center and sign a bigger 2b/3a type center, while trading Connolly.

Roy-Ennis-Cullen/Malhotra/Stoll-Gaustad down the middle.

This would leave the need for another winger (someone with size, please).

Ennis's end of the year interview when he said they're keeping him at center.

He said that he expects the center experiment to continue not that they are going to keep him there exclusively.

Thats what I thought.

EDIT: listened to the interview. Ennis expects to play both for awhile. He also said he likes playing both.

I actually think Jokinen would thrive a bit not being the #1 center like he was in Calgary and NY. He probably wouldn't be lights out, but I could see him looking a bit more like his old self in a smaller market with a more simple and harder work ethic system/environment.

Honestly, I think that's precisely the kind of deal they would move Stafford in. He's not going to bring a player back, his production this coming season is too much of a question mark, it seems logical than that he goes for a pick, as Darcy seems to prefer adding those via trades rather than prospects.

With Regier trying to motivate Ennis to bust his hump over the summer the way he did, I would be surprised if they made a move that all but cemented Ennis's spot on the roster.

I don't see Regier getting to the "I've got to cut bait with this guy" point with Stafford like he did with Paille and MacArthur this past season.

If that were the case, I could see a trade that was purely to move up on draft day.

I just think that Regier is waaaay more patient than that.
