The point is not necessarily whether to concentrate on an offensive or defensive philosophy. In theory with the money you can save on a goalie you can load up on top defensive players.

Not saying I agree or disagree with the theory of not paying a top goalie, just clarifying that this doesn't mean go all out for offense either.

I think the difference lies in the type of goalie you invest the big bucks in. It would seem that paying a goalie of Lundqvist, Brodeur, Luongo, Kipper the big bucks is a solid investment because they the upper echelon of the NHL goalies. In a few years, Niemi and Rask are may want a boatload of cash too....

The problem is when you pay an average goalie the money that the elite should get... ie. Huet. I think Huet is a good NHL goalie, he is just severely overpaid and when he struggled this year, it became a big issue in Chicago.
